IMPROVEMENTS TO LYCEUM HALL

The committee is as follows: Messrs J. B. Kent, A. H. McKane, F. O’Neill, J. Guerin, L. B. Hutchison, J. Scott, R. Marley, P. O’Farrell, and the Hon. J. Goodall. The chairman said that the time had arrived when the installation of electric light, heating, and repairs to the Lyceum Hall should be considered, and the rental charges revised. The branch had no building fund, and if the matter were gone into some means of making the present building more payable should be considered. Twenty-seven new members were approved for admission to the party, whicn was a record for any monthly meeting of the party. It was unanimously agreed to forward a letter of appreciation to the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage), expressing approval of the legislation enacted by the Government since assuming office.

GREY ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY

POLLUTION OP STREAMS BY SAWDUST DISCUSSED

A decision to Instruct the ranger to proceed with the examination of sawmills for the pollution of streams with sawdust, and to institute proceedings where necessary was made by the council of the Grey Acclimatisation Society at a recent meeting. Dr. W. McKay presided. •" It was decided to obtain further information about the proposed formation of the South Island Acclimatisation Committee. The second batch of fry is to be liberated as follows:—30,000 in. the Teremakau river and 70,000 in the Crooked river.

Mr I. T. Bennington was reappointed secretary of the society unopposed. The council agreed to write to the Department of Internal Affairs and the Grey Electric Power Board asking them to raise the fish ladder at the Kaimata dam to coincide with tne raising of the dam level.

The president and secretary were appointed a sub-committee to revise the rules.

The council agreed to protest to the Department of Internal Affairs about the proposed use of explosives at the Kaimata dam for the removal of trees from the water.

HOUSE MOVED SIX FEET

DAMAGE BY SLIP AT REWANUI

A slip at Rewanui recently moved the bouse of Mr .Hitchens six feet off its foundations and deposited a layer of mud through It. A washhouse was demolished. The house has had to be vacated because of the danger of further falls.

WEST COAST UNITED AERO CLUB

MR J. F. CANE APPOINTED GROUND ENGINEER

Mr J. F. Cane, at present assistant to the chief ground engineer of the Wellington Aero Club, has been appointed ground engineer of the West Coast United Aero Club. He will begin his duties this month.

Mr Cane has his A and C ground engineer’s tickets and a commercial Dilot’s license.

GREYMOUTH MAGISTRATE’S COURT

On a charge of being an Idle and disorderly person. George Mason Elliott, 48, a native of England, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months, by Mr H. Morgan, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, at Greymouth yesterday.

A total of £lO2 15s wag collected in fees at the Municipal Abattoir, Greymouth, last month. The following stock was examined during the month: Pigs 13, calves 12, sheep 441, cattle 102.

DENNISTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE

INCREASE IN CAPITATION

Pleasure was expressed by members of the Denniston School Committee at the monthly meeting, when notification was received that the school capitation allowance had been increased by 42 par cent. There were present: Messrs 5. Warren (chairman), R. Pollock, W. Black, J. Anderson,. M. Brodie, H. Pearson, the secretary (Mr. W. G. Cooper), and the headmaster (Mr J. Lockhart).

It was reported that advice had been received that there was every prospect of a commercial course being instituted next year at the Denniston District High School. Six students had already signified their desire to take this course and more could be accommodated. Women's institute

A meeting of the Burnett's Face Women's Institute, held in the Mission Social Hall. Burnett's Face, was attended by visitors from the Denniston Women’s Institute. The competition for the month, "What can be made from <me yard of britway," resulted: Mrs Brock (child’s dress) 1, Mrs Lewis (nipper doth) 3. Mrs Phillips gave a humorous recitation entitled “/nspirattos.” A demonstration was given by Mrs Brock. A "statue” barn dance was won by Mesdames Brock and Spence, Supper was provided by the Burnett’s Face women.
