PREVENTION OP FLOODING BY SELWYN RIVER

Cr. J. Heslop presided over the monthly meeting of the Ellesmere County Council. It was decided to do grading worK on the school grounds at Sedgemere without, charge to the committee, and to construct a footpath from the recreation ground to the new school at Dunsandel. The Doyleston Athletic Club’s request for assistance in improving the tracks at Osborne Park was granted. Tenders accepted for water-race cleansing were:—No. 1 contract, 413 chains. O. H. lies, 9d a chain; No. 2 contract, 312 chains, O. H. lies, 8d a chain; No. 3 contract, D. J. Manson, is 3d a chain. . Cr. McMillan reported on an inspection of flooding and overflowing at the Selwyn river at McWhas road in Selwyn county.' Among precautionary measures suggested the erection or a stop-bank was favoured, with the planting of more trees. It was further suggested that the engineers for the two counties should make further investigations and prepare an estimate of cost of a bank.

TAI TAPU METHODIST CHURCH

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS ENDED

The Tai Tapu Methodist Church iubilee celebrations were concluded with a reunion tea meeting sacred concert in the church more gan 200 people being present. At the tea inert ing an iced cake, presented by Mes dames M. Gilmour and J. Wills, . a P° decorated with 70 candles, was cut by Mrs C. Walls, the oldest woman member of the church. The Rev, M. Ayrton presided, end a vote of sympathy was passed with Sir R. Heaton Rhodes m his illness. The businerj report was read by Mr T O. Morgan, and letters of congratulation to the church were read from Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, the Hon. F. g. Webb, the Hon. G. Hunter, the Revs. S H. Peryman, A. J. Seamer, W. G. Francis, W. A. Sinclair, Mrs Chapman (Miss-Osborne), and Miss E. A. Peryman and Mr C. H. E. Graham. Mr Morgan outlined the history of the church, and said that the success of the jubilee celebrations was largely due to the untiring efforts of the Rev. M. Ayrton, who had aimed at collecting £'2oo for the church, and to date had received more than £l6O. Mr Ayrton hoped to liquidate the debt on the church as a mark of respect to the early Methodist pioneers of the district. ~ Addresses were given by the Kev, Clarence Eaton (chairman, North Canterbury district), the Rev. Lawrence North (Christchurch Baptist Church), fend the Rev. C. H. Kendon (Spnngston). A musical programme was contributed. The accompanists were Miss Anna Tobeck and Mr E. Fehsenfeld. Golf Club Closes The Tai *apu Club closed its 1936 season recently. Mr W. G. Macartney, president, welcomed the large number of players present, many of whom were visitors from other clubs. The closing day .stroke handicap was won by Mrs Weston. . ■ Mrs W. G. Macartney, wife of the president, presented the prizes.

FRIENDLY CRICKET MATCH

PREBBLETON BEATS HALSWELL

The first cricket match of the season was played on Saturday, when the Prebbleton Club sent a team to Halswell. Prebbleton won the match by 16 runs, their total score being 98 runs (Smith 30). Halswell made 82, Cherry, Lowe, and Smith, for Prebbleton. and Taylor, Irving, and Jordan, for Halswell. were the most successful bowlers.

Basketball

The Clarkville girls’ basketball team visited Prebbleton on Saturday, when a match was played against the local girls. Prebbleton winning by 12 goals to 10. Miss O. Baynon (Clarkville) was the referee. In the evening the visiting team was entertained at a dance held in the Public Hall.

Mothers’ Union

The monthly service of the Prebbleton branch of the Mothers’ Union was held, members meeting afterwards in the Parish Hall. Members were asked for contributions towards the fund for a memorial to Mrs West-Watson, the late diocesan president. Group discussions on matters relating to the work of the movement were held during the afternoon. The hostesses were Mrs G. Askm and Mrs H. Prebble.

SOUTHBRIDGE DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE

Mr A. McPherson presided over the monthly meeting of the Southbridge District High School committee. A letter from the Education Board said that consideration had been given to representations made by a deputation from the committee about the possibility of extending the scope of manual training at Southbridge. It had been decided to take no action pending the outcome of consolidation proposals which were being investigated by schools in the Ellesmere district.

A letter was received from the Director of Education in reply to one from the committee seeking assistance in the purchase of a wireless set for the school A committee was appointed to seek advice.' Writing of the head teacher’s house, the board said that until a house was condemned the department would not consider the erection of a new one. It was hoped that funds would be available soon to make repairs. The Minister for Education, in 'reply to a complaint about- the nonattendance of the dental nurse at the Southbridge clinic, said that the nurse had been unable to transfer to Southbridge last May because it was impossible for her to obtain living accommodation. When this difficulty could be overcome she would resume treatment at the clinic. /

Permission was granted for the holding of a fete to aid the secondary department. The committee also approved a proposal to entertain Mr M. V. Blake, an old pupil, before he leaves for England to take up a commission in the Royal Air Force.

Mrs J. Glassey was appointed caretaker of the school.

HAWARDEN TENNIS CLUB’S OPENING

The Ha warden Tennis Club held its opening day, when about 50 members and visitors took part in the matches arranged. The club captain, Mr R. E. Foster, welcomed the visitors, and the president, Mr J. Spence, declared the courts open. .

MB W. W. MITCHELL

The funeral of Mr W. W. Mitchell, a well-known Doyleston resident, was largely attended. The services at the house and at the Ellesmere cemetery were conducted by the Rev, S. Bailey, of Leeston. Many members of Orange Lodges were present and Bros. D. S. Reid, K. Ridden, A. Bayles, R. A. Batt. D. Marshall, and R. J. Millar acted as pall-bearers. The lodge service was read by Bro. Brown, P.M., of Ashburton. AKAROA CRICKET CLUB

SATISFACTORY YEAR SHOWN AT ANNUAL MEETING

Mr T. Masefield, club captain, presided at the annual meeting of the Akaroa Cricket Club.

Mr F, C. Newton, honorary secretary, presented the annual report and balance-sheet, the latter shoyring a satisfactory credit of more than £ls. Two new members were elected, and one resignation was accepted. It was decided to accept the offer of a match on Labour Day, at Akaroa, with the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association, and to accept the invitation from the Wainui Club to play a friendly match, at Wainui. Opening day was fixed for October 17.

The captain and secretary were left to make arrangements for , matches with a team from H.M.S. Achilles when at Akaroa, and with Mr J. Burns’ team.

The following officers were elected: —President, the Mayor, Mr F, R, E. Davis; vice-presidents, Messrs E. X. Le Lievre, H. W. H. Piper, H. W. Oliver, A. Rhodes, and L.. J. CHEVIOT CROQUET CLUB

GREENS TO BE OPENED ON OCTOBER 10

The annual meeting of the Cheviot Croquet Club was held in the Public Hall, Cheviot, recently. The president (Mrs J. Williams) presided. The balance-sheet showed receipts to be £.13 17s lOd, expenditure £7 5s Id, and cash credit balance £6 12s 9d. The election of officers resulted:;— Patroness, Mrs G. W. Forbes; president, Mrs R. G. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Cheviot Lodge, No. 8604, Ashley district, was held in the Presbyterian Hall. The N.G., Bro. A. Goodman, presided. Sick pay was passed for three members. One woman member was initiated as an honor ary-member.
