PROGRESS LEAGUE AT SOUTH BRIGHTON
PORT CHRISTCHURCH SCHEME SUPPORTED
Preliminary arrangements for an official welcome home to Mr N. hj. Fisher, who will return from the Olympic Games on October 22, were made by the. South Brighton .Progress League at its monthly meeting Jast Mesdames U. V. |awteLL and E. amL Messrs ,F.W. Larcombe, R. Campbell, and S.J. Grammer were teleqted a sub-commit-tee to make arrangements forasocial to be held in the South Brighton Hall on October 24. .. .... The president (Mr J. S. Ainsworth) pr, fhe resignations of Mr; and Mrs.G. Duncan from the executive of the league were received with regret. Mr F. S. Woodward, chairman of the South Brighton Gala Committee, said that the committee had raised £3l 13s 6d for works in the district, but had not met for about five months. He suggested that a meeting should be called to decide what was to be done with the money. The chairman said that the Gala Committee was not actually a , subcommittee of the league, although -the league had made a grant to the committee. ■ , .. . After discussion, it was agreed that Mr Woodward should call a meeting of the Gala Committee. Mr E. A, M. Leaver, a former mayor of New Brighton, gave an address on amalgamation with the city of Christchurch. . „ . . A deputation from the Port Chnst-. church League waited upon the league requesting its support for its project. It was unanimously agreed that the league should write to the,Horn,D. G, Sullivan, member of Parliament for the district, asking him to take steps at an early date to have a referendum taken in Christchurch to decide whether the residents Were in favour of the Port Christchurch scheme. It was also agreed to write to the New Brighton Borough Council, asking, it to give its support to the Port. Christchurch League’s deputation Which will wait upon the council at its next meeting.
