ABOUT £7O RAISED SCHOOL ASSOCIATION TO BENEFIT Approximately £7O was raised by the Cobden Home and School Association by a bazaar, which was held on Friday and Saturday. The results of the competitive cooking competitions, which were judged by Mr P. Blanchfield; were as follows: —Butter sponge (1): Mrs A. McLean 1. Sponge without butter (4): Mrs H. MURCHISON RUGBY UNION APATHY IN COMPETITION GAMES ■ •' i Mr J, Gilroy presided over the usual monthly meeting of the Murchison Rugby Union. The Inangahua Union wrote reporting on the recent visit of the Murchison representatives to Reefton. A return visit will be made by the Inangahua representatives later in the season. The Inangahua Union also asked that the local union endeavour to send a junior team to Reefton this season. They would be willing to make a grant towards the expenses of the trip. The union decided to make every effort to send the juniors to Reefton at some time after the team had played in Motueka.

A discussion took place about the lack of interest displayed recently in the competition games. For the last three Saturdays matches had been forfeited or postponed, the Murchison Club being the chief offenders, having forfeited on the last two Saturdays. •It was decided that the union should take a firm stand in the matter and insist on the rules regarding forfeitures being adhered to. The Murchison Club was fined 5s for not having given the required notice when they forfeited last Saturday. The first match for the knock-out cup was drawn between Murchison and Longford, to be played at Murchison.

RUNANGA AND UNITED DEBATING CLUBS

INTER-CLUB CONTEST AT GREYMOUTH

Senior and junior inter-club debates were held by the Runanga and United Debating Clubs on Saturday night. United won the senior and Runanga the junior debate. The subject for the senior debate was “That the Fear of Punishment has Moi^ilnfluence.. oil ..Human.' Conduct fhan the Hope' of' Reward.” Umted, which took the affirmative, was awarded 377 points, and Runanga 291. The subject for the junior debate was “That the Accumulation of Wealth Indicates Success in Life.” Runanga, which took the affirmative, was given 305 points, and United 279. Mr P. Kingdon, the judge, complimented the Runanga Club on the wonderful improvement shown in the last year. INGLESIDE AT BLACKBALL The Blackball branch of the Caledonian Society recently held an enjoyable ingleside in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Mr W. Richie was master of ceremonies and Mr J. Williams played the music. Supper was served by the ladies. Personal Mr Hubert Hogg, who has been on the staff of the Blackball Post Office for five years and a half, has been transferred to Greymouth, and left yesterday to take up his new duties. Mr James Anderson has been promoted to fill the vacancy.

The Porter-Rhodes diamond is valued at £40,000, the Romyn diamond at £30,000. and the Nassack diamond at £35,000.
