A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held at Greymouth yesterday, before Mr H. Morgan, S.M. A fine of £3 and an order for costs were imposed on John Charles Kennedy and Mervyn James Parish, who pleaded guilty to cutting and removing timber from a scenic reserve without the written, permission of the Minister. Thomas Kerry, who appeared on remand on two charges of assault and one of trespassing, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour for assaulting his wife. To this charge, defendant pleaded not guilty. On a charge of assaulting his father-in-law, John Scott he was fined £1 in default seven days’ imprisonment, and for trespassing in the house occupied by his wife during the currency of a separation order, he was convicted and discharged. For cutting the corner at the intersection of Mackay and Tainui streets, Harold Prescott was fined 15s and was ordered to pay costs. MUSIC EXAMINATIONS HOKITIKA RESULTS

FRANZ JOSEF WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Mrs J. Pope presided at the monthly meeting of the Franz Josef Women’s Institute. The motto for the meeting was “A life without mirth is like a lamp without oil,” and the roll call, “Funny sayings of children.” Competition winners were;— Home-made toffee: Mrs McCormack 1, Mrs Emony 2. Patching; Mrs Wyatt 1, Mrs Pope 2. A demonstration of smocking was given by Mrs Wyatt. The hostesses were Mesdames. J. Pope and D. Graham. PERSONAL NOTES FROM MURCHISON On Saturday last the friends of Miss M. Bruce gathered at the residence of her parents to celebrate her twentyfirst birthday. Competitions and dancing were enjoyed throughout the evening and a very pleasant time was spent. Another enjoyable evening was spent at the home of Mr and Mrs T. Borkin on the Occasion of the coming-of-age of Mr Cecil James. Mr and Mrs A. H. Fell and family have left Murchison to take up their residence at Waipapa Bay. Mr Fell has been employed on the local staff of the Public Works Department, and has been transferred to the East Coast railway. Mr A. Bain, of the local staff of the Public Works Department, left on Wednesday on transfer to the East Coast railway, at Waipapa Bay. MURCHISON COUNTY COUNCIL RATES STRUCK FOR YEAR The monthly meeting of the Murchison County Council was held, with Mr T. Morel (chairman) presiding. The council supported the Petone Borough Council, in its endeavour to urge the Government to alter the present system of rating. The council resolved to give notice of its intention to strike the same rate as last year, which was a general rate of 3 5-6 d in the £, and a hospital rate of Id in the £.
