HIGHER WAGE RATES
COST OF MAINTAINING MAIN HIGHWAYS
The increased rates of pay soon to come into operation for men employed by local bodies on road maintenance were briefly discussed at a meeting of the No. 14 District Highways Council yesterday afternoon. The chairman, Mr ,F. Langbein, said that members knew that from June 1 rates of pay for men employed by the Public Works Department had been materially increased, and it seemed very certain that in a short time much increased rates would be paid for men working on main highways, through. local bodies. He did not know whether the council need take any action in the matter at this stage. Members were well aware of the position. Mr F. W. Freeman; We can only let matte: s take their course. If these wages are to be fixed by the Government then they will have to be paid.
A member: Will the Highway? Board pay subsidies at the new rates of pay?
The chairman said that, pending further instructions, he could only say that he thought subsidies would be paid at the new rates.
