MAIN HIGHWAYS ESTIMATES

Works Recommended

Total £179,000

DISTRICT COUNCIL’S PLAN

A recommendation to the Main Highways Board that 129 miles 11 \ chains of roads in counties in the No. 14 highways district should be declared additional main highways in 1936-37 was made at the annual meeting of the district council yesterday. All but four counties in the district had made their applications in writing, and of those four, Selwyn, Akaroa, and Eyre submitted “post entries,” which were acpepted and incorporated. Wairewa county was the only county not to ask this year for any of its roads to be declared main highways. The chairman, Mr F. Langbein, said that he did not know what chances the recommendations had of being accepted in full. Members of the council knew as much as he did. There had been no advice from the Main Highways Board whether it was or was not its intention to hectare many additional lengths. * Mr F. W. Freeman: We can at least work on the principle, “Ask, and you shall receive.” New Items The principal new items, apart from maintenance work, on the estimates were as follows: — Ellesmere County—Four miles 30 chains of extra sealing. Eyre County—Deviation from Waimakariri bridge to Bennetts. Halswell County—Birdiing’s bridge; sealing from Tai Tapu to Motukarara, and from Christchurch to Lincoln. Malvern County—Six miles of sealing on the main West Coast road. Mount Herbert County—Widening of small bridges. Oxford County—Sealing of two miles 12 chains in Oxford township. Paparua County—West Melton to Sandy Knolls, sealing, and on the Sockburn-Southbridge road sealing from Prebbleton to the county boundary.

Rangiora County—Sealing at Southbrook and on the Woodend pound highway. Springs County—Sockburn-South-bricige sealing, five miles, Waimairi County—Sealing, three miles five chains on Masham-Belfast road, and two miles 35 chains on the 11am highway. Lyttelton Borough—Evans Pass to Lyttelton borough, road widening. Departmental Jobs—Styx crossing, Scckburn crossing, Ashley river bridge on the Main North road, Bruce and Cass creek bridges on Main West Coast road, and a further sum for the completion of the Waimakariri bridge on the West Coast road.

The estimates, which are a tentative programme to be submitted to the Main Highways Board, were passed. The full total of the work was £179,957, of which the Main Highways Board was to find £133,452, and the counties £46,505.
