PROCEEDS OF COMMUNITY SINGING

TO TUB EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—l noticed an advertisement appearing in “The Press” of Thursday announcing a community sing to be held every Thursday in aid of the Mayor’s relief fund. Is this money to be distributed among us relief workers, or to be invested in a special fund as is done with other money contributed by our worthy citizens of Christchurch, and lent oy our present Mayor (Mr Beanland) some time ago. Now is the time we could make good use of this -now lent-out money, in buying food and clothing, etc. I am sorry that we lost a good citizen in that we had until recently the Hon. D. G. Sullivan as our Mayor. I am positively sure he would not have done what our Mayor (Mr Beanland) has done. I suggest that we, as relief workers, and those on sustenance, demand that the Mayor hand the money over to us or resign fropi his position and hand the Mayoral office over to Mr J. K. Archer.—Yours, etc., , ONCE BITTEN. June 12, 1936. [The Mayor (Mr Beanland), commenting on this letter, says;—“ The whole of the money raised by the community sings is and will be distributed in relieving distress in the city. With regard to the second part of the letter concerning the investment of certain sums of> money, these moneys have only been invested for short terms, and, if necessity arose, would be used for the purpose for which they were raised. In the meantime a little interest is being earned, which will all help in the relief of distress in the city.”]
