SMALL INCREASE
COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL ENTRIES A small increase over those for last year is shown in the entries for the 1936 festival of the Christchurch Competitions Society. The fancy dancing and vocal sections have gained in popularity, but entries in the elocution and instrumental sections have slightly fallen off. The detailed entries are as follows: — Fancy dancing .. 340 464 Vocal .. .. 661 674 Elocution .. .. 496 437 Instrumental •• •• 264 220 Total .. .. 1761 1795 Although the entries officially closed on March 12, the period in which they might be received has been extended by the managing secretary, Mr T. F. Hall, and many late entries have been received. There may be still a few more entries to come in. but it is not expected that these will affect the totals now published to any considerable extent.
The judges have been selected as follows:—Elocution, Mr Gordon Kirk (Nelson); vocal and instrumental, Miry Wentworth Slater (Wanganui); fancy dancing, Miss Jean Home (member of the Royal Academy of Dancing, late of England, and now of Wellington). Miss Agnes Shearsby has been appointed official accompanist. The competitions will begin on May 9, and will be conducted in morning, afternoon, and evening sessions, according to a time-table to be issued shortly.
