BROADCASTING IN AUSTRALIA

NEW STUDIOS FOR SYDNEY AND MELBOURNE (I'MSS 4.9HOCUTIO* IBLKCHU.M.) AUCKLAND. March 30. The rapid expansion of radio broadcasting in Australia in the last few years was explained by Mr T. W. Bearup, Victorian manager of the Australian Broadcasting Commission, who was a passenger by the Niagara, travelling to America, Britain, and the Continent to investigate the latest developments. The commission controls 16 A stations, also a special short-wave station operating near Melbourne, the latter having proved invaluable iij reaching the outback parts of the continent and outlying islands, and also in giving Australia direct contact with the world.

The commission intended to build new studios at Sydney and Melbourne. The total licenses were now threequarters of a million. The annual fee was £1 Is. - '

The commission had decided to engage eminent world artists, including Elizabeth Rethberg (soprano), Ezlno Pinza (Italian baritone), Eileen Joyce (pianist), and Howard Jacobs (conductor of the Savoy Dance Band, London). Mr Bearup said he thought it possibly that some of these artists might be available for New Zealand if that were desired.
