BROADSIDING

—♦ — SEASON CONCLUDED THREE LAP RECORD BROKEN Another thrilling exhibition of broadsiding was seen at Monica Park on Saturday night, when the last meeting of this season was held. The weather, which was clear In the first part of the evening, clouded over towards the end, but although ,a slight southerly drizzle set in, all the events were run off without mishap. The temperature was cold, however, making- conditions unpleasant for spectators. The chief attraction of the evening was in the appearance of two crack Australian riders, “Bluey” Wilkinson and Clem Mitchell. Both of these riders were in good form. Perhaps the most interesting and exciting match in which they appeared was the Australian match race. This was a series of three races over three laps from a clutch start. In each of these races both of the Australians rode superbly, and were together practically the whole of the distance. In the first race both men established', a new track record for the three laps, clutch start, Wilkinson winning by inches from Mitchell. In a challenge for the Chevrolet gold helmet N. Neill beat J. Roscoe, the former holder, Neill will hold the trophy till next season. . In an interval during the programme Mr B, M. Fields, the chairman of directors of Stadium Speedways, Ltd., presented the trophies won during the season. Rewi Dixon at the end of the evening’s programme successfully attempted the “stunt” recently demonstrated by the famous Putt Mossman, of riding through a flaming board. The evening’s results were:— AUSTRALIAN MATCH (Three laps, clutch start) First Heat—B. Wilkinson 1, C. Mitchell 2. Time, Imln 3 l-ssec—a record. This was a very thrilling race.
