DEATH SENTENCE ON CONSPIRATORS
BULGARIAN OFFICERS TRIED SECRETLY
(Received February 23, 9.46 p.m.) SOFIA, February 22,
A secret court-martial has passed a death sentence on Colonel Domain Veltcheff and Commandant Kiril St. Antcheff on a charge of conspiring to overthrow King Boris's Government. Two others were sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment and eight others to eight years' imprisonment; These included army officers. Fifteen were acquitted. . .;, • Veltcheff was formerly a "power behind the scenes in Bulgaria.'* He organised the Officers' League which carried out coups d'etats in 1923 and 1934—by the latter, ? which established the Gheorgieff regime, he suppressed political parties which he declared had become topis of Macedonian terrorists. Veltcheff refused the office of Premier, holding that military rule was inadvisable, but later came into conflict with King Boris, resigned from ithe Government, and was exiled. It is doubtful whether he will be executed .because of his universal popularity. '
