LONDON'S WATERWORKS
MORE THAN £1,000,000 TO BE SPENT

The Minister for Health (Sir Kingsley Wood) attended a meeting of the Metropolitan Water : Board, which is responsible for supplying Greater London. Proposals involv-. ing an estimated cost of £940,250 for additional filtration facilities at the board's Hampton works, were adopted. An expenditure of £435,000 is already authorised for remodelling the machinery at these works, so that £1,375,250 is involved. This will increase the output of filtered water from 65,000,000 gallons a day to 120,000,000 gallons. The new works are expected to take about four years to -complete*
[Speculation in pepper caused considerable trouble on the London markets early in the year. The Arm Of James and Shakespeare, which was converted into a public company at the eiid of 1934, and .was wound up at the beginning of February, was involved. Heavy falls in the values of shares occurred on the London Stock Exchange, and it was said that the banks were determined to teach speculators a lesson, and wciuld -support only genuine traders, There were tumours of a scandalous gamble involving leading figures in finance, industry, and public life.3 '
