"NO INFLATION FOR CANADA"
*mm* I<IIM I lIIIHWIIIII I CAREFUL CONTROL OF PUBLIC CREDIT
OTTAWA, February 21... "There will, be, no inflation for Canada," the Minister for Finance (Mr Charles Dunning!) told the House of Commons, opposing a proposal to grant pensions to all Canadians at the age of 60, through the issue of currency estimated by the Minister to cost 500,000,000 dollars a year. No country, he said, ever grew rich through inflation. Canada was making progress in the control of public credit, but must proceed carefully along the lines laid down already in Parliament. Mr R, B. Bennett opposed the proposal,on the ground that the plan was non-contributory and really intended to force all workers to retire at 60. It would militate against character-building. Social Credit members supported the proposal, which was eventually ruled >out of order.
