SUNLIGHT LEAGUE

Dr. D. E. Currie presided at the monthly meeting of the committee of the Sunlight League. Reporting on the health camp finances, Dr. H. E. W. Roberton, chairman of the health stamp committee, and of the health camp committee, said that the increase of funds had jumped from about £BO oi Vkxe prevvovk3 seas, to atoovit StlAOfc this year. This was due largely to the work of the organiser, Mr Sloan, and to Messrs Craig and Richardson, who had organised the mjotor-car art union which had realised a clear profit of £7su. It was decided to send letters of thanks to Messrs Craig, Richardßon, and Sloan, and to the Tramway Board for granting permission to Mr Sloan and Mi- Richardson, to carry out their undertaking. Dr. Roberton emphasised the importance of making very careful plans for next year so as to expend the money in the wisest way and give the greatest benefit to the children. To have a permanent camp as other centres possessed, had long been wanted by the committee, and the plans proposed by J>r. T. Fletcher Telford, to be drawn up by the chairman, and the honorary 1 organiser, were to be submitted at the next health camp committee meeting. Miss Wilding (honorary organiser) appealed for help to find a suitable room in town which could be used to store camp equipment, and at the same time be used for sub-committee meetings. Health Camps i ft was reported that the. increase in weight at two of the girls* health camps .averaged five pounds and a half at Pigeon Bay and five pounds ! koura, while the boys' camp, at OkauVs Bay averaged four ppunds.>7 Kai,koura was the most ; economic]ally run of all camps, owing to thfe generosity of the people la providkfg the meat and vegetables, and the Kaikoura dairy factory in providing the entire butter supply. The cost of the* food worked out at 3s Id a child; a week; at Pigeon Bay just over 4s (which is the figure for the other Sunlight League camps held in previous years), but at Wainui where no help was given, the cost of food worked out at over fls a boy< a week. The main cost of the camp is the buying of the initial equipment and the transport of the children. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr and Mrs £. Hay for providing accommodation, also to Mrs Blomquist, president of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, and the Pigeon Bay School Committee. Mr* Hay stated the children had been very well behaved and complimented Mrs Hobsoh oh her able management. Mrs Acton-Adams had written congratulate ing Miss Grace Wilson, who was In charge of the .camp at Tipapa. Reports from Kaikoura and Brighton spoke of the excellent conduct of the children, showing that the Sunlight League is building up worthy traditions. A letter of gratitude. is to be sent to Mr and Mrs Acton-Adams, and votes of thanks passed to Mr Monk, Mrs Jensen, Mr and Mrs R. Mason, the South Island Transport Company, Kaikoura Freight Company, Kaikoura, and Brighton School Committees, Qkain's Bay Domain Board, Mr and Mrs E. Smith, Dr. Withers, Dr. Glasgow, tho staffs of all camps and the prefects. Also to Drs. J. P. McQuilkin, H. Turner Jennings, Hazel Allison, I. Macintyre, and W. H. Rothwell, for examining the children. METHODIST LADIES' GUILD MEETING HELD AT NEW BRIGHTON The New Brighton Methodist Ladies' Guild held its first monthly meeting for the new year in the Methodist schoolroom this week. The president (Miss I. Palmer) presided over a good attendance of members. Miss Palmer reported that this year's garden party would be held in the grounds of the Methodist orphanage' at Papanui. Mesdames F. Gardner Brown, J. A. Cook, C. J. Wilson, C. Ellis, and Misses I. and F. Palmer were iippointed a cbmmittee from the guild to assist in making the arrangements. The secretary stated that the delegates to the Methodist conference would be entertained next Monday by the ladles of the East Belt Methodist Church. Arrangements were made for the guild to provide for a table to seat 36 persons at the tea to be held ijn conjunction with the Methodist conference. ; , ' It was decided to postpone the guild gicnic until the conference had been eld.
