PARADE AND SERVICES IN CITY

To-day, May G, the twenty-fifth an- " nivcrsary of King George's accession ■ to the throne, will be celebrated in ■ Christchurch with thanksgiving ser- • vices and ceremonial parades, and with the holding of a general holiday. ■ If the day is fine a service will be • held at the Cathedral at 9 • a.m.. or, in the event of wet weather, ; at 11 o'clock. The chief city service, • however, will be in Hagley Park at 11 o'clock, following the ceremonial par- ' ade and march past, of all units of the territorial force stationed in Christ- . church and one squadron of the Can- ' terbury Yeomanry Cavalry. . The troops will parade in North Hagley Park at 10.15. Koyal Salute A feature of the parade will be a Royal salute of 21 guns, after the first verse of the National Anthem, which will be played by the band of the First Battalion, Canterbury Regiment. The parade will remain at the present till the last gun is fired. The commanding officer will then call for three cheers for his Majesty. The parade ground will be situated near the Carlton Mill bridge. There will be an enclosure, reserved for civic dignitaries, the consular corps, nursing sisters, wives of officers, and officers not on parade. The presentation of jubilee medals j to territorial officers will be made by the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.). The Mayor .will preside at the service after the par: de,. and the address will be given by the Bishop of Christchurch, Dr. Campbell West-Watson. Other ministers who will take part in the service will be Dean Julius, the Revs. T. W. Armour, Clarence Eaton, L. A. North, and D. Gardner Miller. In the event of wet weather there will be a service at the Durham Street Methodist Church in addition to the service at the Cathedral. Advice of this, if necessary, will be broadcast from Station 3YA. Chain of Bonfires Christchurch boy scouts will provide at least two links in the chain of bonfires that will be lit throughout New Zealand to-night—one of the most spectacular of New Zealand's contributions to the celebration of the jubilee. The great chain of fires will be lit at 7.30 this evening. The principal fire in Christchurch will be in North Hagley Park, between the No. 5 and No. 6 playing fields, near the Armagh street bridge, and the second fire will bo high on the Port Hills, above the Bridle Path, and visible over practically the whole city. The camp-fire evening, which will be held in Hagley Park, is expected to prove one of the most enjoyable of the several functions arranged for the public's participation in the celebrations. The scout authorities have invited the public to the camp fire evening, which will include songs and items and appropriate camp-lire entertainment. Regatta and Carnival Lyttelton and Sumner have made their plans for separate celebrations, which will include a regatta on Lyttelton harbour and a water carnival at Monck's Bay. Displays of fireworks will be an evening feature in both boroughs. There will be a procession at Sumner at 1 p.m. and an address to the children by the Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson). A baby show will be heid in tlis Town Hall in the afternoon, followed by sports on Clifton beach. The evening programme will include a water carnival and fireworks display at Monck's Bay, a procession of illuminated boats, commencing at 7 o'clock, and a submarine explosion at 9. There will also be a jubilee dance in the Town Hall. Arrangements have been made to light a bonfire at the top of Shag Rock. The celebrations will begin at Lyttelton at 10.30 a.m., with a procession of bands, decorated vehicles, children in fancy dress, old identities, and members of the general public. A regatta will be held in the afternoon, commencing at 2, and in the evening, commencing at 7 o'clock, there will be a display of coloured lights from launches in the inner harbour, and a fireworks display on the Gladstone pier. Broadcast of Celebrations The broadcast from England of the jubilee celebrations has been arranged as follows: To-day—6.so p.m. New Zealand time. Talk on the jubilee proceedings by Mr Philip Thornton. Tuesday, May 7—4.45 p.m. New Zealand time: A special jubilee feature programme consisting of a review of the 25 years of the King's reign. This programme will conclude with messages of loyal greeting to the King, relayed direct from various parts of the Empire. His Majesty will then address the people of the Empire from a room in Buckingham Palace, and it ; is expected that the duration of his speecn will be three minutes. Wednesday, May 8 —4.45 p.m. New Zealand time: An electrical recording of the thanksgiving service at St. Paul's Cathedral attended by their Majesties on May 6.
