STUDENTS' SOCIAL

The annual dance, card party, and conversazione of the Canterbury College Graduates' Association was held in the Students' Union Buildings, Hereford street, on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance, and the function proved a very successful one. The committee in charge of the arrangements was Mr A. E. Flower (chairman), Mrs C. H. Perkins, Misses Ethne Tosswill, Marjorie Sherris, and Faith Herdman, Messrs R. Hepburn, R. N. C. Hill, and T H. Poison (secretary). Music for dancing was provided by Len Blogg's orchestra. Mrs J; mes Right wore a black taffeta frock with gold metal run sleeves, and Mrs Flower's black frock had sleeves of lace.

AERO CLUB'S DANCE On Saturday evening members of the Canterbury Aero Club entertained their friends at an enjoyable dance, held in the club's rooms, which had been decorated for the occasion with Chinese lanterns, balloons, and bowls of chrysanthemums. Deep appreciation of the many sympathetic messages she received from New Zealand when her husband, Mr C. T. P. Ulm. was lost with his crew in a Pacific flight last December, was expressed to-day by Mrs Ulm, who passed through by the Mariposa on her way to the United States. I She was met by Mrs L. Skilling, j whose husband was navigator of the lost aeroplane, and Miss Kathleen Rogers, who, with I\'rs Ulm. flew across Ihe Tasman Sea in the Faith in Ausrra*a in 1933. Both now live in Auckland.

Lip-reading circle The Spreydon lip-reading circle and vocational guild met on Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs Line, "Katoomba," Kipling street, where an enjoyable evening was spent. Mr Kinnear gave an inteiesting talk on the Southern Alps, glaciers, and snowflelds with accounts of amusing incidents and blackboard drawings. Mrs Line demonstrated a series of tap-dancing by a wooden comedian, placed oh a spring-board. The figure had been carved with a pen-knife from an ordinary willow stick by Mr E. Hawthorne. Miss Elaine Legg gave a demonstration of smocking frocks and blouses, and she will repeat the demonstration next week, by request. Garlery, "Rosebank," Springbank, entertained a number of friends at a social in the Oddfellows' Kail, Cust to celebrate the coming-'of-age of their youngest son, Ernest. An enjoyable time was spent in games, competitions, and dancing. Songs were sung by Mrs J. Richardson, and Mr £. C. Ducat, and a recitation given by Miss P. Smith. Mr H. Hcinisch, on behalf of the guests, presented Mr Ernest Gartery with a gold key. Mr A. V. Smith proposed the toast ol the guest, and the Rev. N. H. Finch that ol the parents. Winners of competitions were:—Miss M. Crooks, Mrs Richardson, Mr H. Nicholson, and Mr F. AldridgeMiss Peachy and Mr E. Graham, Miss P. Smith, and Mr F. Aldridge.
