GARDEN FETES

YOUNG WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION

j A large number of well-wishers and . supporters of the Young Women's f Christian Association and their friends 3 took advantage of the beautiful wea--3 thcr on Saturday to visit the picturesque grounds o£ Bishopscourt, which 1 had been kuidly lent by Bishop and * Mrs West-Watson for a garden fete ; organised by the Board of Directors 2 of the association. , The Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), who was accompanied by Mrs Sullivan, officially opened the fete. ' There were no associations more de- - serving and worthy of support than ; the Young Women's and Young Men's 3 Christian Associations, said Mr Sullij van, and he congratulated the associations on their constant, great, arid J continuous efforts to help the boys and 3 girls of hte city. The girls needed the I Young Women's Christian Association, j and because they needed it, it was the duty of everyone present to make the ' fete the success it deserved to be, he said. Referring to the folk dancing : competition, which had aroused much interest among pupils from primary and ' secondary schools, girls' clubs, and girl ; guides, Mr Sullivan said that he was pleased to know that the old English 1 recreation was being held, and he re- ; called the popularity of the commun- ' ity folk dancing in Cranmer square. Mrs F. M. Warren, president of the board of directors, introduced the ] Mayor, and also Bishop West-Wafson, who welcomed the visitors and invited 1 tbem to inspect the grounds. ; In the folk dancing contest, conducted by Miss Elsie Batcheior, there ■ were 15 entries, and in addition, the • various clubs of the association par- ' | ticipated. The section for primary schools, judged by Mrs Robin Page, | and Miss Joyce Baker, was won by ; St. Albans 1, and Sydenham 2. The section for secondary- schools and rangers, judged by Misses Lois Munro and Alston, was won by the Christ - church Girls' High School team, and the section for clubs and girl guide;; was judged by Misses Alison Burn's and Jean Struthers, and won by St. Luke's 1 girl guides. j Mrs E. D. Mosley was in charge j of a croquet competition, and a gymnastic display was given by the Yr'v.ng Men's Christian Association, undc;- the direction of Mr C. Pegg. Music was supplied during the afternoon by a iadio gramophone lent by Mr J. I. Smail. Stalls were in charge of the following: Cakes, Mrs David Jones, Mrs F. M. Warren, and members of the board of directors; sweets, Mrs R. A. Ambridge and girls of the association; mystery parcels, Mrs W. Paine, Mrs E. B. Walshe and helpers. Mr Desmond Hewitt was in charge of a mystery tent, and Mrs Rex. MARY'S ISIBLE CLASS The junior, intermediate, and young j women's Bible classes of St. Mary's Church, Merivale, combined to hold a garden party on Saturday afternoon to augment the mission and diocesan youth work funds. Miss Clark and Mrs R. Norton Griffiths had kindly placed the grounds of "Acland," Papanui road, at the disposal of the Bible classes for the function. In officially opening the fete, Mrs A. K. Warren said that the effort was in fulfilment of the girl's Bible class motto, "Love and Serve." Afternoon tea was served on the Jawn by Mrs W. F. Kent-Johnston and helpers, and stalls were in charge of tiie following conveners:—Sweets, Miss D. Wills; books, Miss Kathleen Turner; ' cakes, Miss Elizabeth Kent-Johnston; needlework, Miss Betty Wilson; shilling stall, Miss Joyce Cameron. Girls supervising the various competitions were Misses Joyce Luck, Shirley Stagg, Helen Cradoek, C. Garam, S. Buckhurst, Helen lleckley, and Betty Byrch. Miss J. C. Scwc-1), youth worker at ! Merivale, was general organiser. BRIDGE AND "FLAG 500" PARTY During the year the Women's Auxiliary of the Royal Christchurch Musical Society has been working unobtrusively to raise funds for the parent , organisation, one of the larger efforts made by members being a bridge and "flag 500" party, held on Saturday evening at Dixieland. White, lemon, and bronze chrysanthemums decorated the lounge, where tables had been arranged for "500," and in the reception room, where bridge was played, a cheery fire added to the comfort of the guests. The president of the auriliary, Mr:: A. G. Lake, who received the guests, wore a black satin frock finished with i a cowled vestee of silver lame to match her coatee. Mrs Lake was assisted by a capable committee, comprising Mcsdames D. Pullar, J. E. Russell, M. Henderson, P. Graham, T. Kennedy, A. T. Newth, Miss H. Jones, and Miss Ranee Broughton.
