WAIKARI COLLIE CLUB

ANNUAL TRIALS RESUMED It. M. WILSON WINS OPEN HEADING Tin- Waikari Collifl Club's forty-third annuiil trials were resumed in fmo weather on Saturday, but during tbo morning a nor'west bree/.o sprang up, becoming very strong ami gutty during llio afternoon. This mndo command difficult at times, and the shocp inclined to run too much. Some very interesting work was seen, and compertition was again very -close, the four pr!?.o vviu- ; ucrs in class 11., open, being separated by only two points, and in class 111., open, by only 21 points, though in the latter class, tho lending dog's excellent performance gafe him a lead of 11 points over tho BOcond. Jfn an endenvour to complete the trials before, tho week-end, officials and competitors were on the ground before daylight; the first run was begun at 6.40 n.m,, and tho remaining dogs of class 11., which had been unfinished at dnrk on Friday, were nil run off before 8 a.m. Class 11., huntawuy with slow, was proceeded with immediately, and overyono worked hard to get the 70 runs in this class through as speedily as possiblo in the hopo of finishing tho last class, tho handy event, in tho ufternoon. At dusk, however, about half the dogs in the class of 40 bad to be left till Monday morning. From this year's experience it • appears to bo necessary for tho Waikari trials to begin a day earlier in futuro to havo four days in which to ensure completion in tho same week. This year competitors proceeding from Waikari to" the Omibi trials on Monday might have been seriously inconvenienced hud not tho officials, with the cooperation of district owners, made every effort to allow competitors concerned, and those from a distnuco, to take their runs earlier than stated on tho programme to avoid tho necessity of their attendance again on Monday. To Eavo time, and with tho consent of tbo owners concerned, tbo usual competition between tho four dogs scoring the highest number qf points in classes I. and H. for the 11. T. Little Memorial Challenge Cup, which usually takes about an hour, was not run, and the cup therefore went to tho dog with tho highest total of points in the two classes, li. M. Wilson's Fly (Kirwoe), with 851 points out of a possible 90. Tho other dogs concerned were (1. A. Parker's George 111. (Falrlio), 83 points, R. M. Wilson's Mac, 81J points, and J. Oricvo's Nip, 76J points. Other special prizes so far decided aro ns follows:—Mr A. L. Trumpor'B silver cup for class I. was won by R. M. Wilson for the second year in succession, and is thus won outright by him. Mr 11. Dam-picr-Crossicy'!? silver cup for class 11., held by .7. Anderson, was won by R. M. Wilson's Fly. Mrs H. T. Little's silver cup for tho dor; scoring most points in classOß I. and 11., open to local club members and competitors who havo resided for at least three months between the Waipara and Clarence rivers, previously bold by J. Shand's dog kennel for tho district dog mustering on hill country of 2000 feet and over, securing most points in class 1., went to A. L. Trumper's Glen. Mr A. F. Vaters's dog konnel for tho district dog mustering on country 2000 feet and over, securing most points in, class 11., was pained by N. S. A. Turner's Toby. The following aro detailed results of events completed on Saturday:— CLASS ll.—Heading, Bringing Back, and Yarding (open). About 300 yards. Time, 9 minutes. (01 entries.)

CLASS lll.—Huritaway with Slew. About 500 yards. Time 8 minutes. (10 entries.)

In Clans 11., B. M. Wilson's Fly, the first prizo winner, cast to the right going out fast but n trifle wide. She made a very fine head, dwelt on the lift, nnd pulled straight and quietly. She kept the sheep in correct position until the gate was opened, and a stubborn lot of cheep yarded in splendid style—a wonderful performance. The second dog in this class, J. Grieve's Tip, cast out wide, made a quiet head, and lifted the sheep well and brought thorn down quietly, but let them off the lino slightly. Nip's work at tho pen was good, but he let the sheep away a little, lie yarded well and worked under good command. C. A. Parker's George 111. ran out well but shifted his sheep beforo heading. Ho brought them back on a good lino until near the yards, yarded well, and showed fine style at tho yards. T. E. Brankin's Tip cast out to tho right nnd had to bo recast. Ho came in nicely on tho sheep, made a fair lift, and brought tho sheep down quietly; he let them get off the line Blightly, but showed excellent stylo at tho pen and yarded well. Tip was under good command and gave quite a good performance.

In Class 111., P. Smale's Clown gave a wonderful exhibition by completing his run, for which eight minutes \e allowed, in tho remarkable timo of 3 minutes 10 seconds, bringing his sheep to tho end of the course in splendid condition. Clown lifted his sheep away well, and held to a straight line through the first polos, both 6heep and dog being under perfect command. Ho made out on a good line for tho second poles, made a slight wobble, but recovered immediately, and finished right through second and top polos without losing another point. It was altogether a remarkable performance which did not even show how good tho dog is. 0. H. Smith s Joe took a firm grip of the snoop from tho start, with good style and fair noiso. He was under excellent command and went through first and second poles on a fair lino, but made a slip on the bottom of the top polo. However, he recovered smartly and went through to finish a good run. 0 A. Parker's Tosl took comZ «° ot L h V. heep splendidly, wont through tho first hurdles, and made for the second on a good lino showing fine huntaway style and no.se At tho third hurdles ho was rather lucky in being able to bring his sheep down to finish inside after a good even exhibition of work. S. S. Barclay's Lloyd as fourth in the open class 111., gathered W sheep well at tho start and went through the first poles well. Ho then got off tho line Bhghtly but recovered smartly and went through tho second poles well He again slightly lost his lino, and twice took command wrongly, but showed good stvlo through the top poles. It was a very Eoo d exhibition for a maiden dog. B The trials will be concluded this morning.
