CENTRAL SCHOOL More than a' year ago the Waimairi School Committee decided to change the name of the school to Papanui Central, but objections were raised by the committee of the Papanui School in Winter's road, which contended that two schools with the name Papanui would lead to confusion and that it had the prior right to the name Papanui. The request was refused by the Education Board. It is understood that the name Papanui Central has now been adopted by the Seventh Day Adventist School in Grant's road. Memorial Hall The proposed plans' for the alterations to the Memorial Hall were submitted to a meeting of the committee on Thursday evening. Mr C. L. August presided and others present were: Messrs E. H. Andrews (City Council), W. G. Chapman, and C. W. Moore (Waimairi Council), A. Syme. J. H. Reynolds, J. Sturrock, and W. Moffatt. The plans provide for improvements to the entrance to the hall, enlargement of the library with a separate entrance from Papanui road, a complete new two-storey portion, giving a social hall 45ft by 30ft, with additional cloak rooms and kitchen. Temperance Union The monthly meeting of the Papanui branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in the Presbyterian Bible Class rooms on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs Graham presiding over a good attendance of Members. A temperance fact was read by Mrs Frampton. The secretary was asked to send letters of sympathy to Mrs A. Borgfeldt Mrs McCullough in their illnesses, and to Mrs Elliott in the illness of her husband. A letter wjb received from Mrs Perryman asking*members to endeavour to get new subscribers to the "White Ribbon." It was decided to hold future meetings on the fourth Wednesday in each month. A collection was taken up for the Maori Mission Fund. Card Evenings The Advance Northcote Association held a successful card evening on Tuesday. In the women's section Mrs Harding was first, Mesdames Grimwood, Moran, and Stewart tied for second place, and in *the play-off Mrs Stewart won. In the men's section, Mr Hubert was first and Mr L. D, Grimwood second. At the Horticultural Societys' evening in the Memorial Hall the prizewinners were: Miss L. Spence 1, Mrs J. L. Neilson 2, Mrs D. Roberts 3. Social Evening A social evening for men only in aid, of the forthcoming. St. Joseph's fete, was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs Moran, Northcote. The early part of the evening was spent in cards and later music and songs. The winners at cards were: Mr F. Douglas 1, Mr W. Pope 2. Consolation jame, Mr E. Drake. Songs were given by Messrs E. Fielding, F. Douglas, A. Moran, and F. Murray. Supper was served by Mrs Moran and Miss M. Moran. Those present were Messrs A. Moran, G. Isle, W. Pope, O. Anderson, E. Fielding, sen., E. Drake, J. Shaskey, J. Johnston, J. Lawlor, F. Moroney, M. Percaskey, F. Murray, sen., T.' Small, and F. Douglas.
