CLAIMS BEFORE LEAGUE
* ATTEMPTS TO COLLECT DEBTS MR EDEN'S REPROACH (Received January 21, 12.50 a.m.) GENEVA, January 19. The League Council was unable to complete itstbusiness, as expected, and adjourned till Monday, after a long discussion of the Finnish claim against Great Britain for approximately £1,000,000 for the use of Finnish ships during the war. Britain paid the Russian Government, through which the ships were chartered before Finland's independence was declared, but the Finnish owners did not receive the money from the Soviet. Switzerland also claims £2.000,000 as war damages from Britain, France. Ualy, and Belgium. Mr R. A. Eden (Lord Privy Seal) reproached Finland and Switzerland for bringing forward insignificant disputes which threatened to turn the wunci! into a debt-collecting agency. A report will be drawn up at the week-end and a vote will be taken <m it on Monday.
