HEAD-OF-THE RIVER CANTERBURY AND UNION CLUBS LEAD The second of the three series of rowing races held annually for the head of the river banner was rowed on the Avon river on .Saturday in ideal weather. The races were for four-oared creWs, and some rowing of a high standard was seen. When the afternoon's sport began, Canterbury had six points for the banner and Union four. Through being beaten by inches in the junior fours, however —a race which it was generally expected it would win—Canterbury had to share a lead with Union. The points at the end of the day were: Union 8, Canterbury 8, and Avon 4Because the programme had fallen an hour behind time, the final of the last event, the maiden fours, which was to have been rowed between two Canterbury crews, was not held. Easily the best races of thj day were seen in the junior fours. In the first heat Union dead-heated with Avon in the fastest time of the day, 2min 19sec. When the race was rowed again, Union won by about four feet: Then in the final Union had a thrilling contest with Canterbury. Approaching the finishing line, Canterbury had a slight lead, but the Union men made a tremendous effort in the last two or three strokes and won by a margin which the judges placed at two inches. The time was the fastest but one of the day, 2mm 20 4-ssec. The best of the other r»ces was the first heat of the vouths' fours. The officials were: Starter, Mr A. T. Evanty, umpire, Mr R. J. Hobbs; judges, Messrs C. Lee, F. A. Brettell, and G. H. Hobbs. The results were:— JUNIOR FOURS First Heat—Union, No. 1 (A. McKenzie, W. Cooper, G. Haydon, and M. Oullen) deadheated with Avon (G. Crockett, R. Walker, J. Rush worth, and L. Hampton). Time, 2mm 19sec. . When the race was rowed again Union won by about four feet. Time, 2min 21Jsec. Second Heat—Canterbury (G. East, J. B. Taylor, T. R. Evans, and 0. R. Hervey) beat Union No. 2 (A. 0. Smith, J. Cullen, 8. Hill, and F. Byrne) by a canvas. Time, 2min 22Jsec. , . Final—Union No. 1 beat Canterbury by inches. Time, 2min 20 4-ssec. This was a great race. Canterbury had a lead almost to the post, but the Union men, with their last strokes, almost lifted their boat from the water to win by inches. LIGHT-WEIGHT MAIDEN FOURS First Heat —Union No. 1 (K. Sorrell. H. Jennings, H. Wild, and F. Bradbury) beat Canterbury (R.MHampton, A. 0. Ives, D. Walker, and W. Barnett) by three-quarters of a length. Time, 2min 30sec. Second Heat—Avon (0. Ebert, J. B. McGuire, W. Francis, and A. Mahoney) beat Union No. 2 (K. Adamson, A. Staples, G. Kemp, and J. Lilley). Union did not complete the course, one of the men being unable to continue rowing. Final—Avon beat Union No. 1 by. a length. Time, 2min 28sec. Avon was going away at the finish. SENIOR FOURS First Heat— Canterbury No. 1 (0. McCormack, A. E. G. Rogers, G. Spence, and M. Hunter) won by default from Union. Second Heat—Avon (C. A: Stiles, F. Thompson, J.> Lane, and N. Barber) beat Canterbury No. 2 (M. Moon, F., C. Cox, J. Stewart, and M. D. Watts) by a length. Time, 2min 24Jsec. Pi na l—Avon beat Canterbury No. 1 by a length. Time, 2min 21 3-ssec. YOUTHS' FOURS First Heat—Canterbury (H. Flower, S. M. Gray, R. J. Loughnan, and G. W. D. Carey) beat Avon (O. Ebert, D. McLeod, J. Kotoul, and 0. by a foot. Time, 2min Final —Union beat Canterbury by a length. Time, 2min 27sec. MAIDEN FOURS First Heat—Canterbury No. 1 (J. O. Renaut, W. A. Hooper, H. Read, and J. M. Steeds) beat Union (J. D. Thomson, A. Sutherland, J. Work, and W. Cooper) by a canvas. Time, 2min 26sec. Second Heat —Canterbury No. 2 (R. Robertson, M. Graham, J. Aspell, and 0. Foster) beat Avon by default. The final was not. rowed because of the lateness of the hour.
