SALE OF OFFICIAL SECRETS
RETIRED MAJOR SENTENCED LONDON, January 18. William Burgess, clerk at the Woolwich Arsenal, was sentenced to a year in the second 'division for communicating information which might be useful to an enemy. The judge said neither the prosecution nor the War Office regarded the case as one of extreme gravity. [Burges, a retired major, had been employed by the Woolwich Arsenal for 11 years at a salary of £274. He admitted that he sold secret information because he was in financial difficulties.] '
