THE SALVATION ARMY

CHRISTMAS FESTIVITIES

DINNER AT THE MEN»S HOME The Salvation Army men's industrial home at Addington presented a scene of unusual animation on Saturdaynight. The occasion was the annual Christmas dinner at which the Mayor of Chrisfchurch (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), and the assistant town clerk, Mr J. F. Eames, were present. The organisation for Christmas makes heavy demands on' the staff and on the Army generally, for in addition to preparing a special meal, a present, which includes at least one pair of socks and a pocket handkerchief, is given to each man. A concert party, organised by Miss Kathleen Chappie was also in attendance. The visitors were received by the officer in charge, Major G. F. Dry, and they at once proceeded to the dining room, where Christmas dinner was eaten in the company of the men, who number at present nearly 100. After dinner the Mayor gave a short address, during which he praised the efforts made by the Salvation Army to relieve distress in times of economic depression. For many years he had been in close touch with the work done in New Zealand, but he had also seen the results obtained in the crowded and congested slums of the Old Country. He was safe in saying that no conditions, however bad, were too hard for the Army to alleviate. His own work as Mayor of the city had brought him into more intimate touch with the organisation, which had never failed to assist him with all the means in its power.
