TOYS PRESENTED AT ST. ALBANS
RETURNED SOLDIERS' EFFORT The St. Albans sub-committee of the Returned Soldiers' Association was amply rewarded for its efforts on Saturday afternoon, when toys were distributed to some 300 children of the district. The grounds of the Victory Memorial School were brightly decorated with bunting, and Father Christmas was present. Sports were held for the children, and the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), and the president of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association (ths Rev. F. T. Read), competed in one impromptu event. During the proceedings the Mayor gave a short address in which he said that Christmas belonged essentially to the children. If there was one thing more than another that he appreciated, it was helping the children to enjoy themselves, and he therefore deeply appreciated the effort made by the St. Albans returned soldiers. It was scientifically true that the greatest happiness was gained by trying to make others happy. In conclusion, he hoped that the depression would lift very soon and make life a little more worth living. The organisation for the day, which was a highly successful one, was in the hands of the chairman and the secretary of the sub-committee, Messrs W. Bain and C. R. Rule. The subcommittee was also responsible for arrangements whereby 20 relief worker? will be able to spend a fortnight in va holiday camp at the New Brighton racecourse
