CITY COUNCIL AFFAIRS

TO THE BDITOB Or TBI I'BtSS. Sir,—l would like to express my thanks to Councillor Milliken for his defence of ratepayers' rights (in face of great odds). No one has any right to use petrol at the expense of others to help any party win a vote. It is similar to the question of council employees' wages. If Labour had to find the extra pay for those employees, the cut would have been applied quickly. The council has no warrant to set itself up as an arbitration court above the Government. It is simply lawlessness. We are told to obey those in authority over us. If their laws do not suit us, others should be elected, but Labour makes no allowance for any but its own, and is but using many of the ignorant ones to get places for itself. The more wages (whether the worker can earn them or not) and less work cry soon collects a good following. We have a few good Labour supporters among the crowd, but their usefulness is practically nil under Labour council's calls.

I was very surprised to see the names of Mr Archer and Mr Beanland against the enquiry into the council's cdministrative costs. No man or woman should have wages above what they can earn, and no man or woman should object to pay 3d a week to assist those who are deprived by mental or physical disability from earning a living wage. If the Government has to find the deficiency we have to make good in taxes, so why soil the good name of our Dominion by all this revolutionary talk:—Yours, 'fair PLAY IS BONNY PLAY. November 12, 1934.
