SCHOOL JUBILEES

TO THE EPITOB OJT THE PRESS. Sir,—"An Old Colonist," writing in these columns a few days ago, seeks a little information on the above subject. Jubilee committees probably do handle quite a substantial amount of money collected for their particular purposes. I should say that such a committee on being elected by former pupils and others closely connected with the school, would, through its

treasurer or trustees, immediately become the sole custodian of all funds collected by its members; "who give a great deal of their time to the organisation and holding the jubilee celebrations; and their labours do not end with the conclusion of the celebrations. It will probably be realised that a jubilee committee assuming the responsibility, its members would, in the event of financial failure, have personally to make good such failure either from their own pockets or by other prolonged efforts. In the event of a credit balance being shown the committee would not be legally bound or definitely morally bound to expend such surplus on the school concerned, although such a course may be desirable.

I am prepared to say that on appointment a school jubilee committee can be a law unto itself, decide what shall be the destination of its credit balance, and it (the committee) need not disband at a public meeting. Of course, a balance-sheet would be available for perusal by anyone desiring it. by applying to the right quarter. An enterprising jubilee committee would prGbably provide a record book, and I believe that in the case of a recent jubilee this course has been given effect to; but I should say that the committee would decide whether such book shall be placed in the school records, public hall, or other safe place. Hoping that we can get some further opinions.—Yours, etc., OBSERVANT. November 12, 1934.
