STRIKE AT BROKEN HILL
O —— DISITTE OVER COMPENSATION FOR DISEASE I SYDNEY. March 21. ! Broken Hill yesterday witnessed fa general strike as a protest against the Government':; removal of a number of families i',vn> benefits under the Workers' Compensation Act. under which they receive; payments arising from the deaths of men from pneumoconiosis, a disease of the lungs caused by inhaling dust particles. All the shops and theatres are closed. There is no bread and no ice, and only a partial milk delivery. No newspaper is being published. The essential services, lighting, water, and railways, are being carried on by special arrangement. At meetings of citizens, speakers, including clergymen, passed resolutions demanding the restoration of the affected people to the benefits under the act. MELBOURNE', March 21. Ollicials ol the Seamen's Union are m touch with the crews of the Wanganella, Kooyong. and Ailawa, as the result of reports of disaffection. One otlicial is reported to have predicted a general hold-up, but he declined to say so for publication with name. The crew of the Kooyong gave notice, but the captain informed the owners, Messrs Mcllwraith, McKacharn, Ltd.. later, that the notice had been withdrawn. The chairman of the Ship Owners' Federation, Mr J. L. Webb, refuses to comment. EXTENSION I N LIKELY i Received March 21, 11 :uj p.m.) SYDNEY, March 21.
