TRAMWAY APPEALS

FEBRUARY 21 PROBABLE DATE OF HEARING The appeals of Christo.urch tramway employees against loss of status and pay which they suffered in the board's recent readjustment of grading in the service will probably be heard by the Tramway Appeal Board on Wednesday, February 21. The date will be- fixed definitely to-day. The majority of the tramway employees appealing are men who'joined the service of the board at the time of the strike, and lost grading and pay when the board decided to restoie senforit to men who were re-engaged ifter the strike. The remainder of the 6 apjenanls. including four trombus drivers, are men who ■ didnotgo, on strike, instead remaining in the service of the board throughout the oeriod of trouble. An account has been opened at the Ba*k of New Zealand by the Christchurch Tramway Employees Appeal Committee, and a corporate body has been formed, the chairman and treasurer of which will operate the account. According to the board's staff roster for to-day four of the men who joined the staff during the strike have been dismissed and four of the discharged union men have been taken on in their place. It is stated that the men were discharged because of unsatisfactorv records. It is understood that none of the 12 men who lost their jobs in the strike, and who will be employed again under the board's rationing scheme, have yet begun their duties, pending a supply of uniforms.
