CANTERBURY TOURNEY ■SOME SURPRISING GAMES Heavy rain at 5.30 p.m. yesterday put a stop to the games set down for the third day of the Canterbury Croquet Association's twentieth annual tournament, held on the United Club s lawns, but play will continue at 9 a.m. to-day, and will continue until Monday next. Spectators were treated to many j surprises in tne handicap events, ! especially when A. G. F. Ross was (eliminated in both the singles and doubles. This was accounted for m Iha doubles by S. McCullough playing exceptionally well, while Ross was | slightly below form. Mrs Scandrett, I playing brilliantly and using her ! bisques judiciously, was successful in ' the handicap singles in eliminating A. IG. F. Ross. There was a thrilling finish in the Izard Memorial championship doubles, when Miss Bell, who, being left to play a lone hand, hit in a splendid ;}hot which took her to the peg. In the second round A. G. F. Ross, partnered by Mrs Hadfield, played very expert croquet and succeeded in making a full round, including a triple peel, and pegging out to finish at 26-2. The first game-in the Canterbury open championship, with H. A. Penn playing against Miss Bell, brought off a perfect round and a triple peel, the game ending 26-4. In the second game, however, the contest was not so smooth. It might have gone to three games had not Miss Bell, who was then playing exceptionally well, missed Ihe return ball after four back. Penn took advantage, and ran out the winner. S. McCullough, playing in the third round of the handicap singles against Mrs Palmer, to whom he had conceded one bisque, played right up to his handicap, making two breaks. He finished at 2G-7.
