AUCKLAND

LTHE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, December 8. An upward movement in insurances and a firm tone throughout the other sections of the investment market were the dominant features of the trading on the Auckland Stock Exchange this week. A healthy volume of business was completed, principally round late rates, while the dealing again covered a wide range of investments, increasing interest being displayed in several less prominent industrials. Values were steady in Government loans, but trading was light. Practically no business was done in bonds, while the main turnover in ctock took place at the latter end of the period, when all issues were done at current rates, except 1949'5, which registered a rise of 5s to £lOl Activity was again more marked in local body debentures, and substantial business was done at improving levels. Support for banks was fairly steady. Bank of New Zealands showed a steady improvement, hardening 6d over the week to 48s 3d. Commercials of Australia were definitely stronger, and were lifted from 16s lid to 17s 3d on Australian orders. Some small business was done in English, Scottish, and Australians at £5 12s 6d ex dividend. New South Wales were quiet, and slightly better at the close. New high levels were established in insurance for New Zealands and South British. The former were taken once at 57s 3d, a rise of 2s 3d on previous dealing, while 77s was paid for five parcels of South British, an advance of 6d, with an intermediate sale at 77s 3d. Nationals touched 19s 2d. an improvement of 2d. while Queenslands appreciated 2s 6d, with closing business at 62s 6d. Of the pastoral issues. Loan and Mercantiles quietened on the announcement of no dividend on preference shares. Goldsbrough, Morts continued to make headway, and rose on sale from 31s 3d to 32s 3d. Levels in other sections were steady. Few supplies of Australian industrials could be located at buyers' present ideas, and very little business passed in those lines. The turnover in mining shares was heavier than that of the previous week, but Waihis and Waihi Junctions were the only lines to make any headway. Waihis steadied at 26s lid, after a gain of 2d, and Junctions were firm round 4s 3d. Levels remained easy for all but a few of the southern issues.
