TENNIS MANAGEMENT

TO TBI *DITOB or THB PHItdS Sir, —Neither "Umpire" nor Mr R. Browning, secretary to the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, and sole selector, vere able to contest my arguments that ttu; - liking list rules should be altered, that they should be rigidly enforced, and that the list as issued was "stuffed." Now look how well things are going. Angas asd Barnett were allowed to play after due date and t layed challenges to Barnett from lower down. Patterson s demand to have his name taken from the ladder being at last acceded to, the way was clear for Robinson to challenge Barnett, but the former, not knowing what had happened, was open to be challenged by Dymond; but this was not accepted by the secretary and sole selector, as he (the secretary) had entered a challenge for Robinson to meet Barnett— surely a most unusual and wrong procedure and again delaying challenges from players below. Then, at the other end of the ladder, Andrews rang the secretary's office to enter a challenge agr-inst Barrer, but it could not be accepted because Mr Browning was out of town. Surely it should have been entered in its due order, even if it had to be endorsed by the secretary on his return; but no. A few days later Barrer, who was defeated by Rhodes-Williams, enters a challenge to this' player, as he was entitled to, which is accepted, and Andrews is hung up and Barrer has missed a challenge from below, and so the game goes on. I would like to ask what the sole selector is doing about teams for the Wilding Shield and Nunnley Casket matches, which are about a fortnight away. Wellington has had matches for both its' teams. What is Canterbury doing? The teams should be provisionally selected and getting practice. What about the Canterbury championships? Players are entitled to know when these are to be played to arrange their itinerary for the season. I suppose as Mr Angas is going to Australia the powers that be will incline to hold this over till Easter, •with a view to gate rather than the players or the game.—Yours, etc., „ VOLLEY. December 7, 1933. [Mr R. Browning, secretary of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, had no comment to offer on this letter ■when it was referred to him yesteroay.]
