DRAINAGE BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The Christchurch Drainage Board met last night, when there were present Messrs J. W. Beanland ichairman), E. 11. S. Hamilton, S. C. Bingham, R. Carter, Charles; Tldl, C. b. McCully, J. S. Barnett, W. C. J- ar S L - H. J. Otley, H. G. Livingstone, and W. J. Walter. An apology for absence was received from Mr \\. rv Carey. Works Committee.

The works committee recoirurtended the board to take over a dram on theNorth road from the Northcote settlement, and extending northwards for about 30 chains. Regarding a complaint by Mr C. Fass, Kerr's road, ot an alleged smell from the sewage farm, the engineer had reported that the house was 45 chains from the nearest open sewage carrier, and it did not seem possible that the smell would travel that, distance. The probable source of the smell was from other operations in the locality. Respecting trade effluents, the engineer reported that as far as could be ascertained by visual inspection of samples the effluents were satisfactory; as a check certain samples had been submitted for analysis to the Government, analyst. Regarding the proposed footbridge over the river Avon at. the weir opposite Med way street, the_ engineer did not recommend a bridge wholly supported by the structure of the dam: he suggested an alternative scheme, but stated that the board was debarred by law from making any contribution to the cost. The engineer submitted alternative proposals for the stormwater drainage of certain properties in North Avon road. Slater, and other streets; the estimated cost of one was £lO. and of the oilier £ll. The report was adopted. Barley Street Sewer. The tenders committee reported that at the request of the trustee, Mr H. C. Hurley, in the estate of J. L. Scott, lenders had been called for the sewer in the subdivision in Darley street, the engineer's estimate being £337. The following tenders had been received: T. Clarke £22-1 17s, A. T. Moody £243 lis 3d, Robert Clark £323 15s, V. Franovitch and party £345 17s 2d, Eeid Bros. £349 2s, William Waddell £389 18s lOd, E. M. Kobson £4ll 15s Od. Mr Harley had agreed to the acceptance of the tender of T. Clarke, which had been accepted. The report was adopted.
