WOMEN'S EXECUTIVE. £67 RAISED BY ISRIDGE I'AKTY. Nearly 1000 families of ex-service men are now being helped by the women's executive of the Christchurch branch oC the Red Cross Society, and during the month of July 1240 gar-1 nients had been given to women and children, and, in addition, 486 articles hau been issued to 220 men for themselves. These facts were given in the depot report, read at the monthly meeting of the executive, held yesterday morning, Lady Wigram presiding. During July 107 families and 385 children had been helped, an the average of new applicants was 20 each week. Many letters of thanks for gifts of clothing were read, including one from a resident of the Kaikoura district. Success of Bridge Party. The statement of receipts and expenditure of the bridge party, held uu July 10, was read, showing that the gross rcceii-s were £73 10s a-id the expenditure £0 9s 6d, leaving a net credit balance of £C7 0s 6d, and several donations which had been promised were yet to come. Lady Wigram had paid for the rent oi the hall. The result was considered most satisfactory, and Lady Wigram expressed gratitude to members of the bridge party committee for their work in organising the party and to the city subbranches for their help. Help From Women's Institute. Lady Wigram reported ...at she had attended a meeting of the Dominion Conference of the Women's Institutes and spoken on the work of the Red Cross Society. The institutes, she said, had done much for the society, particularly in helping the formation of sub-centres in country districts, and she felt sure, by the sympathy and interest the members had shown in Red Cross work, that they would do much in the future. Gifts of beautiful made quilts had recently been received from the women's institutes at Loburn, Sherwood Downs, and Woodbury. General Business. It was decided that a letter should be sent to the Minister concerned, urging the necessity of building, in Dunedin, the obstetrical hosp .al, for which provision was made by Parliament in 1929, when the sum of £32,000 was raised by the women of New Zealand to endow a chair " obstetrics and gynaecology at the Otago University. It was announced that a gift of £5 had been received from the Arm of G. H. Scales, Wellington. Lady Wigram welcomed Miss M. Jones as a member of the executive. Leave of absence for one year was granted to Mrs A. J. Benzie, wno will leave on Tuesday for a visit to England. Lady Wigram wished Mrs Benzie a pleasant holiday, and assured her of a warm welcome on her return.
