DAIRYMEN'S BALL.

SECOND ANNI AL GATHERING. | "Something out of the usual in an ! evening's entertainment" was promised in the invitations to the dairy- j men's second annual ball, which was j held last night at the Winter Garden, j f.nd the committee faithfully kept its j promise, for the ball, which was one of the largest held in Christchurch this year, had many appropriate distinguishing features. The members of the Bailey-Marston orchestra, which supplied tlv- r .'.i:, wore milkmen's spotless white coir-, a cow's head hung over the st a pictures of "Daisy,'' "Strawberry." "Brindle." and other farmyard favourites adorned the walls, and on the small tables in the alcoves were tiny red and white sugar cows. Much amusement was caused by a "cow" which capered and cavorted round the ballroom, between dances, and the distribution of streamers and balloons added to the general air of gaiety. Exhibition dances were given by Miss Jewell Todd and Mr Sidney Hollis, and by Miss M. and items were also given by Mr H. Vincent. The members of the committee were Messrs M. Ryan (honorary secretary), T. Williamson <treasurer), J. Harris, D. Burke, and J. Noonan, all of whom must have worked hard to arouse so much interest in the ball. HIBERNIAN SOCIETY. ST. MATTHEW'S LODGE DANCE. The annual dance of the St. Matthew's branch of the Hibernian Australasian Catholic Benefit Society was held in the Hibernian Hall. Barbadoes street, last night and was enjoyed by a large number of members and their friends. R. Bennett's orchestra supplied dance music, and exhibition dances were given by Mr and Mrs J. Turpin. The organising committee was Misses M. Hampton (president). B. M. Sloan (secretary), C. Jones, Kathleen Grimes, Mollie O'Loughlin, Eileen O'Toole, Kate McMullan, Dorothy Pearce, Dorothy Hallins, Susie Morgan, and Mollie and Edna Grimes. Miss Hampton wore a frock and coatee of mignonette green satin; Miss Grimes, a frock of ceil blue satin and fur-trimmed cape of velvet to match; Miss Jones, orange satin beaute frock and black velvet, cape; Miss O'Loughfin. a frock and cape of holly red satin; Miss O'Toole, a pink taffeta and net frock and cape to tone; Miss Pearce, a frock of green lacc; Miss Mollie Grimes, a black velvet frock and cape; Miss Edna Grimes, a blue lace frock and velvet coatee to tone. A committee meeting of the Hospital Lady Visitors' Association was Held at the hospital. Those present were Mrs E. G. Hogg, president (in the chair), Mesdames C. J. Ward, J. Fleming, Stewart, R. Beals. P. Wynn-Williams. and C. L. Meredith-Kaye, Misses J. Lee, L. Bowen, and R. Muir. Mrs Bartram reported that 25 patients were engaged on occupational work, and the sum of six shillings had been received for work sold. Miss Bowen reported that during .Tune, 15 patients were granted one week at the Rhodes Memorial Home, and 12 were given a second week. The sum of six pounds was spent on relief in homes, and 15 garments and one pair of socks were given to npoilv patients. The library sub-committee is \-~ry grateful for gifts of books from Mrs
