OBITUARY.

MRS REBECCA SA.ML ELS. The death occurred recently of Mrr Rebecca Samuels, an old and respected resident of Papanui. Mrs Samuels was" born at Rochdale, Lancashire, in 1851. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Rice, and came to New Zealand v,ith her parents'in the ship Echunga in 1862. Her father began business as a repairer of musical instruments in a music depot in Cashcl street, where the Grand Hotel flow stands. Mrs Samuels was educated at Si. Michael's School, conducted by Mr and Mr; Hawley, and in 1872 she married Mr Henry Samuels. She retained vivid memories of the early days of Christchurch. and was present at the unveiling of the Godlev statue. The funeral took place at the Addington Cemetery. The Rev. W. H. Orbell conducted the service at the graveside. _ Pall-bearers were Mr William Samuels. Mr Charles Samuels, Mr Herbert Samuels i nephews*, and Mr Clarence Adams. Emily, and Gertie. HERBERT SHOE COMPANY. A.NMAI, STAFF DANCE. Members of the staff of the Herbert Shoe Company, Ltd., held their second annual dance at the Cafe Frascati last night. A shower af gaily-coloured balloons and novelties added greatly to the enjoyment of the guests. Popular dance music was supplied bv Bob Bradford's orchestra, and exhibition dances were given by Miss Jewel Todd and Mr Sidney Hollis. The guests of honour were Mr H. F. Herbert and Mr and Mrs H. S. Goodman. Mrs Goodman wore a frock of black lace mounted on emerald green satin, and a coatee of black panne velvet. Members of the committee in charge of arrangements were Misses I. Miss Jackson wore a frock of deep wine satin-backed marocain, with a coatee to match trimmed with grey fur; Miss Barber, a black silk marocain frock and a white georgette shoulder cape edged with black; Miss Galbraith, a black ring velvet frock, and a lemon cape with white fur collar; Miss Martin, a frock of apricot elephant crepe with coatee to match, with wide sleeves flared to the elbows; Miss Mallinson, carnation pink frock of broderie Anglaise, and black velvet coatee with white fur collar; Miss North, a frock of white coin spotted net, finished at the shoulder with frills and at the waistline with a pale green sash. The rooms were decorated with streamers. autumn berries, spring flowers, and bowls of bronze chrysanthemums. I'ARTY AT SPREYDON. To honour Miss Catherine Taylor, whose marriage will take place shortly, teachers of the Spreydon Presbyterian Sunday School held an enjoyable party in the Church hall. Miss Taylor has been in charge o£ the Kindergarten department of the Sunday School for several years, and during that time has had a large number of children in her care. After supper had been served the Rev. A. Simmonds spoke of the fine work dftne by Miss Taylor, and on behalf of the teachers and parents, Miss Hilda Francis presented a pedestal fruit dish to the guest of honour. Games and competitions helped the time to pass pleasantly, and items were given by Misses B. E. Cochran, A. Campbell, J Searing, J. Mackie. K. Cochran. Inez Woodcock, Esme Fox. and Mr Keith Scoty. Miss Smith and Miss Simmonds acted as pianists.
