MUSICAL RECEPTION.

Mr? Alfted Bunz was responsible for arranging the musical programme of unusual merit which was given at a gathering at the Canterbury Women's Club yesterday afternoon. These informal afternoon parties, held at the club during the winter months, are very popular, and yesterday, as on previous occasions, there was a very iarce attendance.

The drawing-room wa 3 decorated '.villi scarlet berries and hydrangea-, and on each small table was a va.-e of yellow narcissi. "Loure," 'Each), "A'.b Wem"' (Kreisler/, and "Berceuse'' 'Simon), Miss Loui.se Croucher, for whom Miss Betty Ilannam played the piano accompaniments; songs "Lilies of Lorraine" 'Pierre Connor», "Trees" 'Ha;bachi, "When a Charmer would Win Me," from "Rigolatto" (Verdi >, and "On with the Motley," from "Pagliacci," Mr R. Samson; songs, "Musette's Waltz Song"' 'Puccini;, Curlyheaded Babby'' 'Clutsami, "Laddie wi" the Aprii Eyes" 'Charles Willeby) and "The Market" 'Molly Carewi. Miss Annas Gale; piano solos, "Ballade" 'Chopin i, "Waitz" 'Rubenstein), Miss Alison Allsop. Mrs Eric McEachen and Mr Stanley Morgan acted as accompanists for the singers. Votes of thanks to Mrs Bunz and the performers were carried amid applause. MISS D. MAGINNESS. Miss Dorothy M. Maginness. M.A., of Canterbury College, will leave tonight on her way to England. She will travel from Wellington by the Marama, to connect with the Orsova at Sydney. During 1930 and 1931 Miss Maginness was a student demonstrator in the psychology department at Canterbury College, and in 1932 was assistant" to Dr. C. E. Beeby. She intends to continue her studies in psychology at University College, University uf London. For many years Miss Maginness has been associated with the Drama Society at Canterbury College, producing and performing in many good plays; and for the last two years she has been secretary of the society. She is also well known in Canterbury as a fine horsewoman; and she hopes to ride to hounds while she is in England. MISS VERA MOOR K. On June 21 there is to be a pianoforte and flute recital at the Wigmore Hall, wrote the London correspondent of "The Press" on June 9. The artists will be Miss Vera Moore, the verytalented New Zealand pianist, and M. Rene Le Roy. Last year, the same two musicians gave a highly successful joint recital at the Wigmore. This time they will have the assistance of Mr George Roth, 'cellist. A most attractive programme has been drawn up, to include Bach's "Sonata in G minor for Pianoforte and Flute," believed to be presented for the first time in England. While Professor Frederick Moore is away in New Zealand Miss Moore has taken on her brother's class at the Royal Academy of Music, and she is having a busy time, as she j has her own pupils and she also has a number of concerts as well. After the London recital Miss Moore will leave for Paris to keep a concert engagement for June 25. ST. CL'TH BERT'S GUILD. The monthly meeting of St. Cuthbert's Ladies' Guild was held at the vicarage. It was decided to form a committee to deal with matters of interest to the guild, the following ladies being appointed: Mesdames Compton, Greig, Brown, and Griffen. The competitions for the next meeting will be for the cheapest and most serviceable apron, and the most useful articles made from a sugar bag. A parcel of garrrfents was collected to be sent to Nurse Maude- Mesdames Hall and Griffon were hostesses for the afternoon. PAPANI I ODDFELLOWS' LODGE. The Papanui Oddfellows' Lodge, M.U., held its annual ball in the Papanui Memorial Hall. The committee responsible for the success of the entertainment was Bros. H. N. Simmons, E. Hillier, R. Blair, B. C. Miles, R. A. Chapman, A. Dixon, W. Eady. H. Stockdale, G. Waites, and G. Munro. P.G. Bro. H. N. Simmons and N.G. Bro. E. Hillier were masters of ceremonies. Music was supplied by Bradford's orchestra, and extras were played by Bros. F. Comyns and O. Savage. A card tournament was arranged for the non-dancers, the winners being |Mrs J. L. Neilson and Mr Charles Simmons. Amongst those present were the Grand Master of the New Zealand branch, Bro. T. J. Archbold, and the Deputy-Grand Master, Bro. F. Cole, besides other district officers and many representatives from kindred lodges.
