TRAINING COLLEGE.

I PRESENT V. FORMER ! STUDENTS. A method which Training College students have evolved to keep in touch with former students is the holding of field days for various sporting activities, followed by a social in the evening. The first and probably the only tournament of 1933 was held yesterday, when hockey and basketball matches were played between present students of the college and as many of the "former students as were available. The past students' hockey team, supplemented by a number of players from the University Club, defeated Training College by three goals to one on the South Hagley ground in the afternoon. The past students opened with a hot attacking movement, but were beaten back until, after a little indeterminate play in midiield, Barraclough broke awajf to score for Training College. Play then centred in the present students' territory, and an unsuccessful burst of play by the past students was followed a few minutes later by a score on DufField's part. Huston narrowly missed another goal shortly afterwards, but the side stayed on the attack and Duffield scored close in once again. Prominent defenders for Training College were Peebles, Thomson, and Jenkins. The tide now changed rapidly, first one side then the other being on the defensive, but the former ! students began to prove too strong, and the final score was notched by Fancy, j Mr N. Carter was the referee. Two games of basketball were played between the women. In the A division Training College won 6-2, but in the other game the. past students carried off the .honours by four goals to three. The matches were played at Normal School. The football match was cancelled owing to the past students being unable to muster sufficient men for a team. The afternoon's sport was concluded by a dance held at Training College in the evening. Following is the past students' committee responsible j for arrangements:—Mr L. F. N. Ward j (president), Misses Millicent Kennedy, Gwen Rankin, Dorothy Beattie, Messrs R. L. Sowden, C. Harrow, G. Head, . and E. Lunn.
