STATE OF A PLAYGROUND.

TO TBF. EDITOR OV THU X'ZESt)

Sir, —I wish to draw the attention o! the residents oi the locality to the condition of the Standard 11. playground of Phillipstown School, situated at the corner of Nursery road and Cross street I am not a candidato for the Schoo: Committee, and have no axe to grind whatever; but the condition of th< ground is such that it would be crueltj to keep animals in it. It is astound ing that the ground is left in such vile order, a quagmire at its worst; yet ovei the road at the main school there is a surface of chipped metal which is ali that is necessary. On passing to-day 1 saw a man digging in the south-easl corner. Whether he was draining, 01 getting the ground ready for grass ] do not know. I have seen no school playground in such a filthy condition, and I have seen a few; in fact, it reminds me vividly of Trentham in May, 1915. Hoping that something will be done. —Yours, etc., PARENT. August 9th, 193". [The chairman of the. Phillips town School Committee, Mr T. W. Burgess, states that for some time past the committee has had a party of men under the No. 5 Scheme at work cleaning up the grounds. They dealt with the main school grounds first, and were about to start work on the Standard 11. playground when last week's bad weather intervened. In the meantime, howevor, the children who usually play in this ground are being sent across the road to the main grounds.]
