The Foderal detachments, with General Mac Arthur and his assistant occupying a staff-owned car, moved ,Q on. tho Anacostia camp, after some confusion ovor an alleged order which President Hoover issued to suspend tho operations in tho morning. Tho soldiers surrounded tho camp and unlimbered their equipment for any emergency. Meanwhile the veterans evacuated all their women and children, although somo inflammatory speeches wero made, iu which tho self-appointed leaders urged 'resistance. The general evacuation started witli the utmost confusion, many of the mfn catching freight trains, others starting to walk along the various highways. Those remaining, as an act of defiance to the soldiers, set fire to their own shacks.
