ASHBURTON. MAGISTRATE'S COURT. At tho Magistrate's Court, before Messrs J. W. Bowden and W. Patterson, J.P. 's, yesterday, judgment for the plaintiff by default was given in tho following cases:—F. E. Amos v. J. Thomas, £2 lis and costs 10s; ltowo and Dcnlcy v. D. Morton, £7 lis 4d and costs £1 16s 6d. Severe Prost. Another severe frost was registered in Ashburton yesterday, the reading at tho Domain weather station being 13 degrees. Loyal Ashburton Lodge. At tho fortnightly jnccting of the Loyal Ashburton Lodge M.U., 1.0.0. F., held on Thursday evening, the N.G., Bro. R. W. Patterson presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs G. Hosken in the death of her husband. Sick pay amounting to £l7 13s 4d was passed for payment in favour of 16 members. Two members were elected, three initiated into the order, one proposal for membership was received. Plunket Society. The Ashburton branch of the Plunket Society held, its annual meeting yesterday afteriioon, when the Mayor, Mr W. H. Woods, presided. Tho annual report stated thatthe past year had been one of great activity for tho society. Tho profits of the quicklunch tent at the Gjila were devoted to tho Building Fund. One hundred and twenty-six visits were paid by mothers to the tent at tho Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Show. Daffodil Day proved very successful. Tho foundation stone of tho society's "new rooms was laid in November by Sir Truby King, and in February the rooms, which cost £920, were opened by Mrs ,T. A. Johnstone, president of the New Zealand Council. The report of the nurses showed that in the town 1602 visits had been made to homes and 9131 visits paid to rooms. New cases totalled 100. In tho country 1486 visits had been made to homes and 3286 to rooms. There were 209 new cases. The report of tho treasurer stated that the year opened with a credit balance of £520 lis lOd and closed with a credit balance of £315 10s od, which included the sum of £133 10s lid transferred from the Building Fund. The assets exceeded tho liabilities by £1043 10s 4d. The funds of the society benefited to the extent of £129 19s as the result of the Daffodil Day appeal. The motor-car sinking fund had a credit balance of £2S2 lis 9d. It was found necessary to raise a mortgage of £4OO on the new Plunket rooms. This amount, together with the sum already received, increased the Building Fund to £1052 12s 2d. Tho cost of the building was £919 Is 3d, and the balance of the fund was transferred to the general account. The reports, together with those of the sub-branches, were adopted. A vote of thanks and appreciation was passed to the retiring president, Mrs F. W. Scldon. An address on Plunkct Society work was given by Dr. M. B. N. Tweed, medical adviser to the Central Council, Wellington, in which he stated that for every £25,000 subsidy griven to the Plu'nket' Society bv the Government the latter saved £loo f ooo iu hospital subsidy. ,
