SOUTH CANTERBURY.

TIMAK-U. UNEMPLOYMENT. The Timaru Unemployment Committee met on Thursday evening, Mr T. W. Satterthwaite presiding. The Rev. 11. T. Peat said that his church had handed over a section at Kensington, to half a dozen unemployed for gardens. The secretary, Mr E. O. J. Foot, reported that six men had volunteered to take plots and eighteen xVlots were still available. Comedy Presented. The English comedy, "Cousin Kate," was presented in the Theatre Royal.on Thursday evening by a company of Timaru amateur players. The proceeds are to be devoted to assisting the work ■ of the Central Relief and Plunket So-' cieties. ; Under the direction of Mr S. Razell Wood, the presentation was well cast, and provided refreshing entertainment. The cast was: Cousin Kate, Mrs W. G. Tweedy; Mrs Spencer, Mrs F. F. A. Ulrich; Amy Spencer,' Miss Mary Bond; Heath Desmond, Mr S. Razell Wood; the Rev. Bartlott, Mr L. S. Nicoll; Bobby Spencer, Mr J. R. Wood; maid, Miss E. -M. Hassall, - Boys' Welfare League. At a meeting, of the Boys' "Welfare League Committee,, presided ovofe fry the Rev. P, Gladstone Hughes, the secretary reported that after payment, of | accounts totalling £lB 13s- lOd, the League had a credit balance of £33 : 13s, which would keep boys in pocket money for two or three weeks. During this year 14 boys had been found permanent positions on farms, six placed in permanent jobs, and 30 had 1 been given temporary work ranging from a day or two to three weeks. The average daily attendaiace had' been 51. Mr A. Knowles, superintendent of the workshop, reported that the average attendance was 32. The N superintendent of the sheet metal class, Mr A. E. Grossi, reported that the work was handicapped by a shortage of materials. It was agreed to vote £1 to the purchase of materials for that branch of the work. After general discussion it decided to institute a small library, and it was agreed to make a public appeal for suitable books and magazines.

Following tho serving of supper Mrs Evans cut the second birthday cake of the Women's Division. Mrs C. Davies, the first Tern uka member to be married'; waß presented with a memento by the-.first president (Mrs J. McCormick). The musical programme was: Piano, solo, Miss Sullivan; songs, Mesdames L. V. There was a good attendance at the presentation of "The Last of Mrs Cheyney," by the. St. Andrews Dramatic Club. Incidental music was supplied by Mrs H. L. Wimsett, Mr A. H.
