RED CROSS SOCIETY.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Women's < Yuinnit too of the Red Cross Society was held yesterday at 127 Worcester strict, Lady "Wigram presiding over a guud attendance of members, including i-i'presentatives of the Opawa, New Brighton, Lower Riccarton, and Upper Ilk-carton sub-branches. It was decided that Mrs N. McGillivray (New Brighten) and Mrs Cyril Stringer be elected to the committee. Lady Wigram reported that the committee had received many letters of thanks for gifts of clothing and blankets. She also expressed great gratitude for the generous response she had received to her appeal for blankets made a month ago through the newspapers. Depot Report. Mrs Herbert Smith, who is in charge of the depot, said that the committee had now been working three months. .She said that 221 families had received help during this month, and a number of these had received help earlier and returned for further assistancc. _ _ The total number of applications for three months were 58-1 families. Four hundred aud ninety-oight children had been supplied with clothing during this month; 1273 garments had been given to necessitous cases, making a total for the three months of 3622. One hundred and twenty-seven blankets had been given out during the month, 560 garments had been given to workers' to be made up, and 178 knitted articles, including singlets, jumpers, socks, etc., had been received. Mrs John Stevenson's party had cut out 764 garments, making a total of 2159 articles for the three months. Mrs Smith said that boys' shirts and jerseys were urgently needed, and also shoes and stockings for boys, girls, an'd women. It was decided that the money received from the community singing meetings be earmarked for the purchase of boots and shoes. To Help the Funds. For the entertainment sub-committee Mrs C. J. Treleaven reported that a dance held recently had resulted in a profit of £ls, and a bridge party in a profit of £2l for the society's funds. Mrs H. G. Livingstone said that the Riccarton sub-branch had made £lO by a bridge party held last week. For the Babies. Mrs J. S. Neville reported that eight complete sets of babieß' clothes had been given out. Her sub-committeo had distributed 216 garments, and were now supplementing the clothing of children up to two years of age. During the month Mrs R. H. Livingstone's sewing circle had sent in sixty-three children's garments. Mrs Neville said the most urgent need now was for clothing for children up to two years of age. Visitors' Reports. Miss CotteriJl reported on cases which she had visited, some for the second time. She had met with a few very necessitous cases. Mrs McGillivray said she had visited 43 families in New Brighton, and nearly all were in urgent need of help. She and Miss Cotterill agreed that all who had been helped were mist grateful and most reasonable in their requests, asking only for what was really necessary. Stea4y Progress. Lady Wigram said that ten new subbranches had been formed since last monthly meeting, making 27 in all. The committee was most grateful for a grant of £4OO from the Bridge of Remembrance Committee, and specially thanked Mrs J. Wyn Irwin for her thoughtfulness and kindness. For the past three months the committee had been able to help only the wives and children of returned soldiers; now it was hoped that help could be given to the moo themselves. Before the meeting closed several quilts of woollen patchwork, lined with flannel, the work of the Lower Riccarton sub-branch, were shown, also some coloured knitted quilts, interlined with woollen material and backed with sateen, and many full-sized quilts made of teased wool, and covered with quilted floral sateen, the work of the Merivale ladies. FIRE BRIGADE BALL. Members of the Kaiapoi Fire Brigade held their annual ball in the Orange Hall, Kaiapoi, on Thursday, evening. There was a large attendance, representatives being present from New Brighton, Sumner, and Southbrook Brigades. The hall was decorated with red and black streamers and balloons, and subdued coloured lights made the decorative scheme very effective. Musio was provided by the Ogilvie dance orchestra, and supper extras were played by Miss I. S. Clothier. The M.C.'s were Messrs T. Ayers and A. Burgess. A lucky spot dance was won by Miss L. Barrett and Mr V. Itudkin, and a Monto Carlo by Miss A. Todd and Mr A. Burnip. Tho following service honours were presented to members of the Brigade by Mr L. B. Evans, chairman of the Kaiapoi fire Board: —Superintendent G. McGregor, gold bar (37 years' service) ; Assistant-Driver F. Bryden, silver bar (9 years' service); Fireman A. Joy and Fireman Harry Fowler, silver medals and bar (7 years' service) Foreman A. Carr, Fireman W. Tait, Fireman Hector Fowler, Fireman VV. McPartlin, and Fireman E.
