HAGLEY PARK.

PROPOSAL TO REMOVE FENCE OF FENDALTON AREA. A suggestion that the isolated area of Hagley Park on the north side of Harper avenue, between Fendalton road and Hclmore'a road, should be thrown open by the complete removal of the existing fences, on the Avenue side, was made by Mr R. B. Owen at yesterday's meeting of the Christchurcli Domains Board. Mr Owen also suggested that somo of the hollows in this part of the park could be filled in to advantage. No action was decided upon, the matter being referred to the Parks and Gardens sub-Committee. ~

Mr Owen, said that the area in question was not used for grazing, so that the removal of the fence would cause n» inconvenience. As it was motor-cars had at times run into the fence, which was not in good condition. The 'chairman pointed out that this part of the park was included in a larger urea for the whole of which a rental was being received for grazing, oven though it might not all be used for that purpose. Mr W. 11. Winsor: I think it would be very desirable to throw the whole of the area north of Harper avenue open. That is, of course, unless a large rental is being received for the grazing rights. Members said that a difficulty would be that if the fence was removed, stock that was driven along the avenue would stray on to the area. The chairman referred to Mr Owen's suggestion that the area needed levelling. lie thought this would be inadvisable, as he liked to see a bit of roughness about, the park. This little piece should be preserved to show the people what their parks had been like in the past, for most of the rest had been levelled.

Mr Owen: I was not sugegsting that it should be levelled into a lawu, but that some of the holes should be filled. The Hon. 1). Buddo said that there was a great deal of rustic beauty about the area at present. "If people keep to the path the undulations will cause no trouble," was the chairman's final comment.
