TOWN PLANNING INSTITUTE.

CHRISTCHURCH BRANCH. SECOND ANNUAL MEETING. The second annual meeting of the Christchurch branch, of the Town Planning Institute of New Zealand was held last night. There was a large attendance over which the vice-chairman, Mr A. R. Galbraith, presided. Amongst apologies for absence received was one from the chairman of the branch, the Hon. Sir Heaton Rhodes, M.L.C. The second annual report stated that the membership consisted of 20 mem-, bers, 31 honorary membfers, and 4 student members, a total of 55, a decrease of one on. last year. The titles of the lectures delivered, and 'of the discussions which had taken place during the year, were set -out. The report which the Technical Group, j on request, prepared on a subdivision I in Waimairi county, had been adopted. ,The branch co-operated with the New Zealand Institute of Architects . and the Society of Arts, in arranging with the Christchurch City Council for the establishment of an Arts Advisory Committee; Mr R. S. D. Harman was appointed the representative of the branch on the committee. A conference was arranged by the branch between the City Council and the Waimairi County Council on the subject of the zoning of shopping areas adjoining the boundaries of each body, and a satisfactory agreement was arrived at between the two Councils. A conference called by the branch decided to .set up a Metropolitan Relief Works Committee, .with a Technical Sub-Committee, to report on economic relief works in the metropolitan areas. 'Mr A. H. The Council of the Institute had made a grant of £ls; it was anticipated that this year the grant might be reduced. x At the meeting of the Council of the Institute, held on December 17th, the vice-chairman of' the branch (Mr A. R. Galbraith) was appointed a vicepresident of the Institute. _Pn the motion of Mr E. H. Andrews, seconded by Mr C. G. McKellar, the annual report was adopted. Election of Officers. The chairman, in proposing the reelection of Sir Heaton Rhodes as chairman, said that while Sir Heaton Rhodes, owing to his many public duties,,,; had not been frequent in his attendance at their meetings, he had given them great assistance indirectly in becoming the head of the branch and by doing everything possible, with the limited time at his disposal, to further the interests of the Institute. Officers , were elected as follows: Chairman, Sir Heaton Rhodes, M.L.C.; [ vice-chairman, Mr A. R. Galbraith; honorary secretary, Mr E. Scott; honor- ! ary treasurer, Mr A. H. Bridge; executive, Messrs J. Cullens, J. L. Davis, C. E. Cross, and E. C. Barker. Mr Galbraith, in thanking the meeting for re-electing him vice-chairman, said that it had been a very great pleasure indeed to him to occupy a position so important, the duties of which were so onerous. He had been able to carry on so successfully because of the efficient help he had received from the executive officers, and from members generally. Mr G. Lawn, Lecturer in Economics at Canterbury College, then gave an address on "Economic Planning," and was accorded, by acclamation, a vote of thanks.
