TIMARU. FUNERAL. A representative assemblage-of municipal o(liet'r.s and citizens attended the funeral of Mr 1). X. Harper, curator of Bofough Parks and Reserves, at the Tiniaru cemetery yesterday. At the annual meeting of the South End Ladies' Hockey Club, presided over by Mr A. Stead, on Wednesday evening the following officers were elected: Patron, Mrs M. H. Richards (reelected); president. Mr I). Small; vicepresidents. Messrs J. O'Shea, E. Garland, R. Jenkins, R. liunciman, E. Youdale, and J. G. Sutherland; club captain. Miss P. Orr: secretary and treasurer. Miss P. It was unanimously' decided that the name of the club should be changed to the Rata Ladies' Hockey Club. Bam Fair. The annual ram fair, held under the auspices of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association, will take place on the show grounds to-day, commencing at 9 o'clock. The Customs revenue collected at the port of Timaru for the first quarter of this year ended yesterday showed a decrease of over £3OOO in comparison with the. figures for the corresponding period of last year, while this quarter the revenue from petrol tax was over £BOO less. The figures for the quarter ended yesterday are as follows, those for the corresponding period of 1931 being given in parentheses:—Customs £10,489 lis 3d (£13,682 2s 6d); petrol tax £3977 6s (£4816 3s 2d). The Customs revenue for the month of March this year at Timaru was over £2IOO less than during the corresponding month twelve months ago. The figures for March are as follows, those for March last vear in parentheses:—Customs £2767 3s (£4918 16s); petrol £994 13s (£995 2s). Rotary Club. Spanish art was interestingly discussed by Mr A. J. Rae, art master at the Timaru Boys' High School, in. an address at the Timaru Rotary Club's weekly luncheon yesterday. Rotarian Vice-President F. I. Washbourn presided. Mr Rae described Velasquez as the only notable . master which Spain had produced, and stated that his work was distinctive in that lie introduced the mass style of painting, as distinct from the outline method. Velasquez' method had been adopted by many notable artists of later year, principal among whom were "Whistler and Sargent. During his address Mr Rae exhibited a number of reproductions of Spanish artists for the inspection of members. Mr Rae was accorded a vote of thanks for his address. TEMUKA. ' Mr X. Hadler, Hinds., who was the guest of Mr and Mrs J. McCormick, Milford, has returned home. Mr H. Hitchcock, of the Bank 1 of Australasia. Temuka, is relieving on the staff of the Ashburton. branch of the bank. Good progress is being made with the singles championship of the Temuka Bowling Club, the competition having now reached the section finals. Yesterday Miss X. Johnston defeated Mrs W. S. Harbrow in the final ot section one and Miss R. Hunt is the winner of section three, while Mrs W. L. Harrfson and Mrs Thomson have yet to plav to decide the winner of section two. meet the loser of the other final for the honour of runner-up. At a meeting held at Arowhenua Pa on Wednesday evening a Maori Agricultural Committee to approach the Department of Agriculture and the Native Minster for assistance and advice in the development, of their' holdings, was formed. This was done at the instigation of Mr W. R. Harris, a representative of tiie Farmers' Union, and as the outcome of ati address given eaplier in the day by Mrs J. 0. J. Oliver,' a member of the Ternuka Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. The personnel of the committee elected is Mesdames W. Mihaka and K. Rehu and Messrs R. C. Taipana, i>\ Fowler. Teone Renata, and W. Mihaka. In the course of her address Mrs Oliver explained the preliminaries to the scheme, and later Mr Harris delivered an address. GEKALDINE.
