ASHBURTON. UNEMPLOYMENT. At rhe weekly meeting of the Unemployment Committee executive yesterday, there were present the DeputyMayor, Mr R. Kerr (chairman). Messrs G. Kelly (county clerk), A. Prentice (secretary Ashburton Hospital Board), C. H. N. Clarkson (Postmaster), T. Gibson (borough foreman), and W. Patterson (town clerk, secretary). '■lt is the first streak of sunlight we have had," said Mr Clarkson when it was reported that a carcase of mutton had been given to the committee for distribution among unemployed by. Mr 11. C. Barton, of Carew. It was decided to thank Mr Barton for his gift, and hand it over to the Hospital Board for distribution among unemployed who apply for charitable aid. It was reported that for next week there were 21 two-day (single) men, 135 three-day, and 90 four-day men available for work. The amount required to give full-time relief was £497 0s 6d, wh,ile £357 had been allocated from the Unemployment Board. It was decided to give the three and four-day men two and three days' work respectively, and place the single men on farms under the No. 4A Scheme. It was stated that at Springburn there were one two-day man, and three each of three and four-day men available for work next week. The postmaster at Springburn was authorised to allocate full-time to the men. Mr Kelly stated that it had been reported to him that there were cases of men with families in Mayfield who had not been taken on for casual farm labour this season, and they had not obtained work since the suspension of the No. 5 Scheme in the country districts. Some of the families were being supplied with food by neighbours. Mr Patterson reported that there were now four registered unemployed at Mayfield, and he had telegraphed the Unemployment Board asking for the reinstatement of the No. 5 Scheme in Mayfield. It was decided to recommend the Unemployment Commissioner to decline the application of an Ashburton farmer to engage his married sou under the No. 4A Scheme. » Fifteen applications were received from farmers for unemployed workers under the No. 4A Scheme. Fourteen were approved and one referred to the Rakaia Committee. Car and Van Collide. A collision between a milk delivery van owned by Mr J. Blair, and driven by his son, and a ear driven by Mr D. Heenan, occurred in Wills street yesterday morning, about 8.15. Mr Heenan was turning into his gateway when the van tried to go past him. Both the van and the car were slightly damaged. Vital Statistics. The vital statistics registered in the Ashburton district for the quarter ended on March 31st show a decrease in births and marriages, and a slight increase in deaths, when compared with tho figures for the corresponding months last year. Details are as follows, the figures for the corresponding quarter last year being given in parentheses:—Births 72 (S2), deaths 30 (28), marriages 16 (17). The figures for March were:—Births 20 (29), deaths 11 (13), marriages 8 (9). Personal. Lieutenant-Colonel L. M. Inglis, .M.C., of Timaru, will be the principal speaker at the Anzac Day combined religious service in Ashburton. Frost. Four and a half degrees of frost were registered at the Domain weather station yesterday morning. Tinwald Mothers' Union. I Daphne (Rebekah) Lodge. The Daphne (Rebekah) Lodge was held on Wednesday evening, when the X.G., Sister 0. Samuels, presided. After the Lodge closed a social hour was spent. Golf. The flag' match played among members of the Ashburton Ladies' Golf Club yesterday afternoon resulted in a win for Mrs S. J. Thomas and Mrs J. Cordner,. Barnett, and Hardy were appointed a committee to make arrangements for furnishing the new room for the Plunket nurse. On the Rakaia Domain, a friendly tennis matdi was played between women members of . the Rakaia and Rokeby Tennis Clubs, resulting in a win for Rakaia by seven sets to five.
