COMPULSORY TRAM STOPS.
REDUCING THE NUMBER. At the request of the Canterbury Automobile Association, the Christchurch Tramway Board has decided to reduce the number of compulsory stops. Yesterday the Works and Traffic Committee submitted the following report : , Compulsory stops were instituted from time to time at the request of motorists and others in order that traffic across tram routes would be protected from collision with non-stop-pins: trams. The present law provides that motorists must not pass a stationary tram-car. This is to protect the pedestrian boarding or alighting from the tram-car. It has the effect of hold, ing up traffic on tram routes considerably, consequently the Automobile Association has requested that the number of compulsory stops be reduced. The committee has considered the matter favourably, because stops not required for tramway purposes increase expenses and prolong the time of tho journey. The committee, therefore, decided to cut out the following stops, which are compulsory at present, and to make them optional stops as tram passengers desire. If tho stop is not required by tram passengers, the motormnn will slow down, bit not ston completely. «. Tho change will commence on October Ist next, and the practice will, continue for one month ns an. expert mont. There are 67 compulsory stop-
