COUNTY COUNCILS.

KAIKOURA. The monthly meeting of the Kaikoura County Council was held yesterday. Present: Crs. James Boyd (chairman), D. Boyd, S. C. Heard, IS. B. Eccles, G. D. Smith, P. Currau, iJ. h. Withers, and Y. Robinson. The wharfinger (Mr A. Trudgian) reported for August as follows: —inward cargo: 250 tons, timber 1681 super feet. Outward: 20J tons, wool and skins S3 bales and bundles, crayfish 1 ton. Inward charges £SO 16b 3d, outward £3 2s 6d. Boat slip fees £l, wages and salaries £U6 8s 6d, salvage of timber £1 4s—total £37 12s 6d. The Cygnet nnd Kuku each made three trips. There was a working protit for August of £29 lis lOd. The electrical engineer (Mr W. Munro) reported as follows regarding tho oleotrio light plant: Units generated 4240, sold 2900, hours run 379. coai consumed 114 bags. Income £145 Os sd; expenditure £lB7 9s Id. The chairman reported on the condition of road-i and having callod tenders for metalling on Beach road, C. Gray's tender at is lOd yard being accepted. At Athelney road, C Cray's tender was accepted at 2s lOd per yard The chairman's action was confirmed. Tlie tender of 0. Gray at 3s 6d was accepted for 150 yards of metal at Stag and gpey road. The treasurer advised that subsidy on rates to tho amount of £1248 Os lOd had been paid to the credit of the County Council fund. Tho Main Highways Board advised thnt tho following amounts had been placed to the credit of the Council: —Waipara-Kailcoura, via Culverden, £74 14s 6d; Puhi Puhi. secondary road, £ll Bs. Tho Cheviot County Council wrote in refer ence to ConwayClaverlcy road. Tho clerk road a letter which had been drafted in reply, regretting the attitude of tho Cheviot County Council Tho chairman said that if the Cheviot County Council would not contribute, tho road could be closed, Tho Cheviot County Council wrote ad vising that tho cost of tho new Huruuui bridge was approximately £12,500, and that Kaikoura's share would most likely be required in abfcut two months. Kaikoura's share would be 10 per cent. —It was agreed that the amount be paid on demand. Tho Christchurch Press Company wrote thanking tho Council for tho use of negatives of photographs of Kaikoura, and stating that a page would be devoted to Kaikoura In THB PRESS. A . „ A» tho contractor will be on the Spey road on Monday it wan decided that the two surfacemen on the Kalkoura-Waiau road attend to the necessary cleaning up of tho road. It was decided to invito alternate applications for working the grader with teams or with a tractor. Cr. Robinson askod that the engineer report on Percy's road, in order that Mr Percy be given access to his property. He also re forred to Rock Point, at Charwell, which required attoation. —Left to tho engineer. Regarding improvements to South Bay road, tho matter was left to the engineer. Complaint was mado by Cr. Curran ro ipecting the uio of portion of Yarmouth street, and the clerk was authorised to notify those res;>onsiblo that tho practice must ceate. Cr. Robinson moved that naroo-plates he put up on the streets of the township. The motion was dofcated, but it was decided to ascertain the cost of tho necessary name plates. Thirteen applications were received for tho position of county engineer. Tho Council met in committee on Thursday and reduced the number to four. After going into the credentials of tho respective applicants, a selection was deferred pending a personal interview.
