LICENSING COMMITTEE.

MID-CANTERBURY. A quarterly meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Licensing Committee was hold a the Leeston Courthouse at noon yesterday. There were present: Mossrs 11. A. Young, S.M. (chair man), I. McOill, B. McNamara, S. <3. Holmes, and E. B. Newton. Tho application of P. J, Kelleher for a license for the Leoston Hotel, which had been held over tor three months, was granted, tho applicant stating that he had carried out certain sanitary Improvements required by the Committee, and that tho Ore-escapes were being attended to, Tho police reportod that some improvements which the Committee had asked should be carried out at tho Railway Hotel, Doyles ton, had been attended to. and the application of M. Riordan for a license was granted. Mr W. J, Hunter appeared io support of the application of F. E. Jones for a renewal of the license of the Hororata Hotel, which had also been held over for three months. Counsel stated that attention had beefc given to the fire-escapes and sanitary arrangements, and that tho owner (Mr Barrett) was having some further improvement's mado. The Committee accepted the assur•anco, and the application for a renewal was granted. Mr Hunter also appeared ia support of F. E. Ward's application for a renewal with rotpect to the Met'hven Hotel. The owner of the hotel (Mr Aspell) apologised for delay in having fire-escape improvements made,' but stated that the work bad been started that day. A telegram confirming his statement was received by the Committeo from the police at Methven, and the application, which had been held over for threo months, was granted.
